As some of you will know that as a member of the NI RCN nursing History Network, we have been working on a book gathering stories from nurses on what it was like working during the 30+ years of the "troubles" in Northern Ireland. Well that book is being published next month and last week's Nursing Standard had a pre-order flyer, whereby if one orders book before the 18th September (publication date) there is a £5 reduction in price. Am attaching (I hope) the flyer for this for members to avail of this offer if they wish.

We are launching the book ("Nurses' Voices") in the city of culture (Derry/Londonderry) on the 18th September and hopefully I can purchase my copy then.

We have been working for 2 + 1/2 years on this and I think a worthwhile task looking on what it was like in a very divided and troubled society. The stories are all from nurses from every aspect of healthcare. If anyone obtains a copy, would appreciate their views on it.

Hi Eric.

I will certainly be getting one. And the link attached works fine - a bit blurred but easily read.

Thank you Will. Sorry about that but it was cutting flyer and reducing it to a size that would download to site. It was in last week's Nursing Standard and I think will be advertised again this month and next. Trust all is well.

not so much a book but a film I was finding through the many freeview TV channels yesterday trying to find something new to watch and not yet another repeat and stumbled across a film on the new drama channel. Now I'm not a sentimental chick flick film kinda girl (prefer a bit or gore and blood) and watched "Sisters of war" what an amazing film and yes i shed a tear - worth a watch but I ain't gonna let you know the ending!!! suffice to say its about a friendship between a nun and australian nurse held captive by the Japanese and all true..........................

Another book well worth a read(if you find a copy, perhaps as an inter library loan?) , is:
Members of Her Majesty Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (1922). "Reminiscent Sketches 1914-1919." London: John Bale.

with approx 12 short chapters, all written by QA's, and a VAD, about different areas of WW1-

Hello! I am reading "the roses of no mans land" by Lynn Macdonald which was also used towards the series of "The Crimson Field", a very well written book again about volunteer " young ladies " with no experience of nursing and the nurses and doctors of WW1. Some really interesting facts and photographs. Mine is a paperback from the internet, a bit tatty but a good read.
