I recently obtained a copy of The Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing training booklet telling us girls how to become nurses and the training available at this hospital What an eye opener full of wonderful, but dated photos,and some out-dated misconceptions. The opening from Dame Hilda Lloyd is positively cringworthy by today's equality standards. "THERE is no doubt that of all careers open to girls, Nursing is one of the most satisfying. It appeals to all that is womanly, and at the same time gives scope for many other gifts that belong to their sex"
Sorry guys but you don't get a mention at all. Looking at the clothes and hairstyles I date it to about the 1950s
The photo on page 12 shows a nurse in full uniform -smoking!
Its a worthwhile read as not only does it show the perception of training but gives a brief history of the hospitals that made up the United Birmingham Hospitals.
Must just share one more gem " The Hospital for Women. The Women's Hospital was founded in the year of 1871 for the reception and treatment of women afflicted with disease peculiar to their sex"
The General Hospital, Steelhouse Lane, was opened on 7/71897 by HRH Princess Christian. The total cost of a fully equipped hospital and the land came to £222,00
There is  wee bit at the back that once contained Conditions of service and application form - both of which are missing So did the previous owner apply and who was she?
