Having recently acquired a set of badges including the enamel RBNA Badge with a D in the centre,I contacted the excellent Kings RBNA Pioneering Nurses site( http://www.kingscollections.org/nurses/home)&; received the finding reply;

I can tell you that the enamel badge was presented to those nurses who had gained the diploma of the Corporation (RBNA) hence the D.  There was an examination once or twice a year for those who wished to get the diploma.  These exams appear to have stopped in 1915 due to the war as it was difficult to find examiners. I don't think it was ever reintroduced afterwards.

I have checked the records and found that Brazilla Fanstone was awarded her diploma by Princess Christian at the RBNA's Annual Meeting on 6 June 1913 having taken the examination on 1 and 2 May.

Thought I would share.
