Hi guys.
If you were asked to create a new SoN badge what elements would you incorporate?
Mine would include elements of the locality coat of arms, perhaps a medical symbol, a lamp, book, the colours blue, green & red and colours associated with nursing, perhaps a Phoenix.  I'd try & get one of my initials into its design too.  It would have to stand out so people would ask where it was from.

ideally mine would be created by Faberge - saw an amazing documentry about him and his eggs on BBC4 yesterday. Seriously mine would reflect my Brummie origins perhaps finding the Rotunda or the bullring - an unusual shape like a half moon and a nursing symbol and agree it would have to be reds and blues

Lol re the Faberge Sue, can you imagine wearing an egg on your uniform!
I'd also make mine big so it stood out & 3 dimensional, perhaps inlaid with gold..........

If we are to reflect the changing nature of Nursing may I suggest the finding? The badge shape to be that of a shield(as heaven knows tomorrows nurses will need one to defend themselves from all that's thrown at them).In one quadrant I would have a tree depicting strength and continuity(although it might be slightly diseased),it would also depict the forests that will disappear to create the tons of paperwork which go to occupy nurses today.In another quadrant I might have a rearing bull( once again a symbol of strength as well as a producer of organic fertiliser which underpins todays NHS).
another quadrant might feature a Muscled arm holding a hammer along side a whistle( this would denote the strength required to manually handle tomorrows generation of obese patients and the whistle to blow when inspectors call).In the last quadrant I might have an open chest surmounted by a lamp.This would symbolise Pandoras chest having released the evils of the world but containing one last item,Hope.The lamp depicts the light of nursing and an inspiration for past and future generations that despite all the negatives Nursing still has a lot to offer (if only successive governments let Nurses actually do what they are educated to do!!!)
A bit of a ramble but perhaps affected on Friday by my last working day in the NHS since the start of my training in 1975.Still hasn't really sunk in yet but I look forward to actually having some time to catch up on things.

It sounds as if you are about to retire. may I suggest, now that you have time, you do as I did and write your experiences in a book. Amazon kindle publish ebooks free of charge and put them up for sale, the royalties you earn are not bad. You will have seen many changes in 38 years of nursing and have many amusing tales to tell.  I still have my SRN badge and my hospital badge from 1959 - '62. It's in my treasure box somewhere.  All the best on your retirement.
