Welcome to the ninth news page here at Schools of Nursing. For me, as editor of the news page and site webmaster, each news page is a seriously anxiety provoking event. Have I in fact got any news? If I have - is it any good? Will people want to read it? Well, for me the first answer depends very much on the second. If I have moved the site in a positive direction as webmaster, the news will take care of itself.... Good theory. But this month it seems to have worked out just fine! So what have we? Our first nurse history, Mary Ellen (Mollie) Watkin, is off the ground - the first proof anyway. Some way to go but I am very happy with the result so far. Much of the detail is complete, but there are quite a lot of photographs involved, which takes up time on preparation and layout, but we are getting there. If you have yet to see the history why not have a look at the preview. All comments appreciated. Link. Once we have the first complete and the templates set, the next histories should be much faster to present - but not at the expense of quality, which we won't compromise. Articles. Again we are doing not too badly at all. Two in the making - one from Edelweiss James - a reprint (suitably updated by the author) of a super article on collecting nursing badges and a second by our own 'nursesue' en route on what seems to be her very favourite subject - badges and Birmingham! No, that isn't the title, which isn't decided yet, just the subject.. Badge Finders Incorporated! No, not a new company website, but an increasingly frequent plea to us here at SoN. Can we help find someone's missing badge. Often lost, very occasionally stolen. Often just missing... If you haven't worn your badge for some time - perhaps haven't even looked at it simply because it is not in use. Ask yourself now - where is it? Then answer me this without looking - are you absolutely sure that it is where you think that it is - sure?... Well yes, I know, you were wearing it when you came off duty - so it can't be lost, can it?... Can it? go on, have a look, but please don't blame us if it isn't there - all we did was draw your attention to that fact! We have been developing a new advice page for those with a missing badge, it will be online next month within the site. Meanwhile, anyone asking via email will receive a standard "How to try to find it" response which might just help you find it. And a lost badge:-
Ann trained at
the North Middlesex
Hospital between 1988 & 1991, and her badge was from Enfield & Haringey
School of Nursing - which has now changed to North London Joint College of
Health Studies. She is currently Matron of a NHS surgical unit. |
Stolen Badges. (Please Note - Our
advice is just that. Not qualified legal opinion). Badges known to have been stolen are a quite different proposition. The first thing to remember is that the theft of a badge or anything else, should be reported to the appropriate authorities. Such a report would appear to be your only direct legal claim upon the badge(s) should it later turn up. The police are the correct people to report theft to. The hospital authorities, if you are working, should also be advised - and if it is a badge issued by a nursing authority which could be misused - for example a badge with a date which is within the possible employment period (the recipient is clearly currently under retirement age) the issuing authority should be informed. But be advised - although you are professionally obliged to report what you consider to be theft, and should never hesitate to do so if a badge could be used in an attempt to substantiate a false claim to nursing qualifications, the whole area is a can of worms. Personally I would only enter the latter area if a badge could be misused as indicated - or had been taken during the course of an obvious crime, such as a burglary, where there is a legal obligation to make a report. Which doesn't seem to help a lot - but could save a lot of wasted time - plus investigations and expense in the absence of real evidence, rather than personal belief.... Main Site/Son Forum/Photo Galleries - searching. Because we want everyone to be able to find what they are seeking readily we have tried to ensure that the separate areas are well equipped with search facilities. They are... The main site is served by a Google search feature - which is supplemented on every relevant page (practically all of them) by a National Archives search engine. Visitors should be able to find anything they seek (and more besides) using these facilities. The forum, likewise, has a built-in search engine which really can find everything there - people/places/hospitals et al - if it is on the forum the search facilities will find it! The Member Photograph Galleries. Right now are restricted to Registered members, but it is so easy to join - with a genuine email address. That is not unreasonable. The search facility is simple and very effective - but is restricted to the gallery. There are currently 1063 items in the galleries - 850 (and rising) nursing badges. The search facility is magic! Try it... In General. The search facilities (all) are specific to the area of the site they are found on. They do not search the whole site. But, all are most responsive (unless you know exactly what to search for) to geographical place names. A common feature of search engines. For example, on the main site, if you choose the National Archives search and enter 'London' rather than a specific hospital, you will be presented with a list of hospitals to choose from - Very useful...

Collecting... Specific Hospitals... And a competition! Again.. One prize,
one winner only - the first correct answer! Well, yet another superb collecting period for me - not many acquisitions - only five in total, but two of them made my days without question. Both absolutely outstanding London Hospital Badges... Which might raise a few questions. The answer to at least one of them might just win the prize described in the next paragraph. I have two complete sets of the London badge. One with the original certificate included - for me absolute magic! One of the badges does not have it's pin - and was purchased deliberately to find out if it can be replaced accurately. It is a complicated pin. If I succeed I might even have reduced it's value to some - as if it is ever sold it will have a certificate relating to the new pin with it. A badge should never be changed from it's original historic condition without remark.... So what about the competition, what about the prizes? (and all the other questions one might ask). Well, here is the start of a chase for anyone who would like to collect a free DVD of the film 'Atonement' - the prize - with it's short but magnificent sequences of St Thomas hospital, nurses and probationers... The badges below are not prizes! The Competition. The badges below are two versions of the famous London Hospital badge. (Photo © 'backman')
