Welcome to our fifty-eighth news page here at Schools of Nursing.  This is our third issue this year for 2021.

Much of the News everywhere is still dominated by the Coronavirus outbreak and actions taken by governments to try to overcome it.

But the good news is the UK appears to be winning the battle and the numbers of people hospitalized with Covid 19 is continually dropping.

*Publishing errors. We do have one or two. Please - if you do see errors, just say so, I will be offended and remove them asap!!

The article links in this column - 'Badge Manufacturers' marks and 'Nurse belts & buckles & Badges' - are continued  below - plus an illustrated article about the East London Children's Hospitals - link below.

The Nursing badges public gallery - nursesue's Gallery start.

We now have 5 galleries which are open to the public without login.  'nursesue's' gallery is the latest.  They take a LOT of time:-

1. Eric's Gallery - The original and much neglected gallery still awaiting update.
CLICK LINK...
2. Peter's 'backman' gallery - 50 pages of 24 badges per page and 1250 pages  - (2400 photographs). CLICK LINK...
3. Mike's 'myk1066' gallery - 17)pages of 24 badges per page and 34 pages - (816 photographs) *with more in progress.
CLICK LINK...
4. Barry Sutton's gallery is now started and updates will follow as soon as possible - many more badges - en-route.... CLICK LINK...
5. **nursesue's gallery is started and the first page is online now. CLICK LINK...

(*Temporarily - You may need to use your browser 'back' button to get back here).

Our original aim is unchanged.  'Individual hospital/school locations have been (and are still being) added; badge shapes; materials used; badge weights; type of fixings; central design (picture) ; inscriptions on the rear (nurse names/dates/maker marks/hallmarks where applicable); designer/s; manufacturers; number made; and dates first awarded are all salient points in our quest being addressed'. Reverse sides being added to each badge wherever we have the photographs.

In short, everyone who has agreed to our publishing a public gallery will have one - using their own photographs wherever possible. We must surely have a copy of almost every UK nursing/hospital badge ever produced.

Click a badge photograph to see the single page!  The links can take you back and forward - a page at a time (24 badges per page) - for all 1310 pages if you like.  Or go to the 'Gallery Start" page at the bottom of any individual badge to get back to the numbered 24 badge page. Sound complicated but you will quickly get the hang of it - promise!

Email messages - Training Transcripts - Qualified Nurses.
In our experience it has not been possible for nurses seeking transcripts from schools which no longer exist to obtain copies. However, we can offer a couple of links which may help in your search, *But please note: We simply cannot respond to transcript requests.

Still accumulating, albeit very more slowly. The 'National' galleries now contain 603,000 nursing/hospital badge photographs encompassing all areas of the UK; 594 photographs (buildings/people/ephemera); and 181 photographs (nurse uniforms), both civilian and military. We have achieved 603,000 already! By the end of 2021?  7000 is a target. It is possible. We continue to make solid progress and will perhaps achieve the largest collection in the UK, if we are not already there. New additions continue, albeit slowly...

We are now at 6681 - 7000 now seems a possibility. We are on the way and just maybe, we will see another magic number this year, thanks to our many contributors. And it is not just a matter of quantity but rather a combination of quantity and quality. The quality of additions made to the site - both in the way of photographs and contributions to our forum has created an irreplaceable contribution to nursing history. We can now claim to have a mini photographic museum here at schoolsofnursing. Sincere, heartfelt, thanks...

But the photographs are not our be all/end all. Our online articles (42) are gaining too, to say nothing of our nursing histories and news pages. There is a great deal of research involved. Someone's time. Someone's money. All given selflessly without thought of gain. What we have here are the seeds of success.

But please, don't break copyrights when uploading/sending photographs. If you are ever uncertain please ask us. Most copyright holders we have met so far have been only to keen to assist.

Collecting... It must be the impossible V - I don't collect anything less....

So here we go again -
"JUST" ANOTHER ONE - OR IS THAT TWO? belt buckles...

Last time (I really do need to stop saying this!) I said... '
And there I was, scraping around desperately inside what was left of my brain to produce a worthwhile column out of the apparent nothingness of Covid19, when I almost fell over the feet of two of our founder members.  One from 'ODPBarry'' and one from 'backman'.

The first belongs to our own ODPBarry@SoN.
A rare 'Naval Nursing Service nurses buckle/belt - believed to be the 1885 pattern worn by nursing sisters; silver plated example bearing Victorian Crowned fouled anchor on lined ground, within laurel wreath surround. Very good condition, complete with single fixed loop. Minor service wear.
Height 52mm.

But the second is mine! (Albeit purchased from '
backman'). A Jewish hospital belt/buckle...

'backman' says that it is 'an interesting, but as of yet, unidentified Nurses silver plated belt buckle. It takes the form of a central motif of The six pointed Star of David of the Jewish faith. This is attached to a lip/eye shape base edged with an oak leaf border. The same base also features on the buckle of the Westminster Hospital Buckle so we may assume the same maker.

This may relate to the London Jewish Hospital in Whitechapel or Tottenham or indeed Manchester or Leeds. If anyone is able to confirm who the issuing hospital was I would be most grateful. The buckle itself is 77mm wide and 67mm tall, with a plain clasp attached to a blue Petersham belt .Condition is good but there are considerable surface scratches from use. An interesting item in need of more research.....

But then any addition to our history is more than welcome - many are 'Genuine, solid silver nurse belt buckles with clasps!.... I find it almost unbelievable that they continue to resurface, but resurface they do!! Perhaps we will find one for every hospital we have listed - perhaps many less than the 700+ schools of nursing we know of, but there must be a good few out there. Anyone with a donation of even a photograph will be welcomed like a long  lost brother! Or sister!

But back to Badges!!

This one from another founder member - 'nursesue'.  Added to our photo galeries on 12/12/2021.....

I have absolutely no idea how long 'nursesue' had to wait for this one, a collecting lifetime maybe, and would not insult by guessing it's cost.  But I would say without hesitation that it is absolutely invaluable to any collector worth her or his salt.  If it was possible to get a new right arm I might be willing to risk an offer - in the certain knowledge that it would be turned down I can resist.!!

I know of only two definite others and one possible.  I don't anticipate ever owning one.  But at least I can say that I have had a coffee with someone who actually owns one.

Is it possible that even more gems are lurking out there? I find it almost unbelievable that some continue to resurface, but resurface they do!! Perhaps we will discover one marked 'F Nightingale - Scutari" - I mean - the impossible almost never happens, and when it does it is to someone else....  I wonder if 'Someone else' has a name and address and a 'For Sale' notice marked 'Five Pounds Only'... I wonder too if that impossible does happen it refers to five pounds cash.  With my luck it  would be Uranium, and keeping the radiation at bay would cost the earth!!....

Imagine, in a recurring dream - a buckle from every single hospital/school of nursing arrived in a crate which was so heavy that no one could lift it. So you spent a week hiring a large crane - by which time the box had vanished!  Forgive yourself? You never would!.. But then, that isn't very likely, is it? Best carry on collecting - and chain down any crates arriving next time!
WB.

Another photograph from the past

Jessie Mc or MacDonald

 1914-15 (Retention of Scottish Theme)

*Training Hospitals/Details *No Link

*Sincere thanks to Dixie Mills for the supply of this photograph.

Dixie says - "I have attached the photo.  I think it was taken sometime around 1914-15 given one or two years.
**Her name was Jessie Mc or MacDonald.  She had lived in Glasgow but was born in North Uist. DOB - 15/5/1865.

I have attached a photo of my grandmother in her nursing or midwifery uniform from the mid 1910’s.  I have been unable to identify the school she graduated from.  Does anyone there have any idea where I should start looking"?

Thank you,

Dixie Mills, MD (retired surgeon) **this has become my pandemic research project,

Well, that is yet another very pleasant note upon which to end the 57th Schools of Nursing Site News..... But just before I go have a look at this superb badge from the now closed Harold Wood Hospital:-

Another 'Gifted' photograph - already added to our SON gallery
