Yes. Certainly sir.

A superb start.  Are you able to enumerate all the Liverpool badges?

Of course - you have our full co-operation.  We have a large number of nursing badges and other memorabilia on the website for your perusal. The use of our photographs will need agreement from individual members where the badges etc are copyrighted, but I think that I can safely say this will be finding if requested.

Very Best.

General Discussion / Liverpool Nursing Schools Exhi...
Last post by LJMU History Archives - March 08, 2023, 01:37:06 PM
Hello everyone,

I'm the new Project Archivist at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), which is celebrating its Bicentenary in 2023. As part of the celebrations, my role involves cataloguing and promoting material which relates to the history of the University. Because LJMU has many historical ties to the Liverpool Nursing Schools, our collections include our Nursing Archives, which are available to view in the catalogue here.

Currently, Nursing degrees are taught in the LJMU Tithebarn building. In collaboration with the School of Nursing and Allied Health we'll be producing a wrap-around vinyl display in this building to show the history of nursing in Liverpool. Although we have a lot of student records from Nursing Schools in Liverpool, and have access to a number of publications, information about the Schools of Nursing in Liverpool is somewhat scarce. We would be really excited to connect with former nurses who might have historical information, personal stories, or photographs they'd like to share with us to help contribute to the exhibit.

Separately, some Graphics students at LJMU are producing artwork in response to the archive of LJMU's history. Because of our extensive badge collection, one of the students is responding by designing badges inspired by the historic examples. We're due to give the students feedback on their work soon, and while I can't share the students' draft work here, if you had any general suggestions or opinions on what a modern badge (inspired by the historic examples) should include, that would be wonderful information to pass onto the students.

We also have an excess of some of our badges which we would like to deaccession and give away, preferably to former nurses of these schools, but secondly to other interested members of the public. The badges we have excess examples of include:

  • St Helens and Knowsley School of Nursing badges LJMUH/NUR/2/2/1/1 (160
    items total)
  • Warrington District School of Nursing badges LJMUH/NUR/3/1/1/4 (60 items
total, not including badges attached to certificates)
  • Liverpool Eastern District School of Nursing badges LJMUH/NUR/4/3/1/1 (53
    items total)
  • Liverpool John Moores University School of Health badges
    LJMUH/NUR/5/1/1/3/2 (11 items total)
  • Central Mersey College of Health Care Studies badges LJMUH/NUR/6/1/3/5
    (53 items total)
We have other badges within the collection which you would be very welcome to view (and which we have photos of online), but only excess in these above. We would retain at least 3 examples of each badge and request that you only ask for one badge per person. Priority will be given to former students of the Schools. Some of the badges have names engraved on reverse, and we welcome enquiries from former students of these Schools who might be looking for their badge. Unless the original owner of that badge can be identified, the archive will keep all badges with names on reverse.

In addition to these badges, we hold five degree certificates for the finding qualifications at Liverpool John Moores University School of Health, which we believe were never given to their original recipient:

  • Registered Mental Nurse - awarded July 1993
  • Registered General Nurse - awarded July 1993
  • Registered General Nurse - awarded July 1993. This file also includes a Central Mersey College badge which was presumably also intended for the recipient.
  • Registered General Nurse - awarded 8 August 1994
  • Registered General Nurse - awarded 4 July 1996. This file includes a letter from the student stating that she has asked and called for her certificate on multiple occasions and still never received it.
We cannot reveal the names of the original certificate holders for data protection reasons, but if you believe yourself to be one of the original recipients who never received your certificate, please email me at C.I.Olive@ljmu.ac.uk and I would be happy to reunite you with your lost certificate!

In addition to submissions of information for the exhibition, we also generally welcome enquiries to deposit relevant material with the Archive. If you have any papers or photographs related to the history of Nursing, particularly Schools of Nursing, in Liverpool, we would be very glad to start a conversation with you about preserving them at our service to make them accessible for future researchers.

I additionally would be grateful for members of the group to share this call-out to other relevant forums, groups, or individuals, if you would like to.

Please direct all personal enquiries and submissions of information to me, at C.I.Olive@ljmu.ac.uk

Very best wishes,

Christopher Olive

Your School / Re: Newsham general hospital
Last post by kim theilmann - February 20, 2023, 09:21:41 PM
Hello, everyone!

I am having trouble starting a "new topic" so I hope this post is read, just the same.

I am writing a story about my great uncle, who was a resident of Newsham General Hospital in the late 1950's.  I've sent away for his admission records, and learned that he spent time between 1957 and 1959 on the  "A-2"  and "Y-3"  wards.

Can anyone tell me what these wards were for?  Were they general geriatric wards or medical/surgical?  I believe he had part of a lung removed in 1955 by "Dr. Henry."   I am trying to get an idea of what his day-to-day activities might have been.  Were there 2, 4, or 6 people in a ward?  Did student nurses provide care?  Was there a lounge area for residents with a television set or activities?

He died in 1959 from lung cancer and skin cancer.

Any anecdotal information you can provide is greatly appreciated.  Thank you!!!

Kim

You need to ask Sue on the private messaging Myke.

As for the visits to SoN - our last report (today)shows over 2500 visits, not bad for a UK Nursing History site.   I notice very many more when the University students are searching the site for history items associated with our site.  But I agree that we need to keep pushing as hard as we can.  I for one would love a break, been a long time now, and we have overcome many hurdles. All ideas are considered helpful.  AND - your personal additions which include the information I requested in the past to include essential information is invaluable. So many thanks.

Will

I admit I haven't been as active due to some personal issues.  I keep in touch with Wilf.  I will try and post some more photos. Like most of us my search for that elusive must have badge continues There are 2 Scottish ones that I'm searching for and have only seen photos of them. So Happy new year  and happy badge hunting x
