Is it me or do some badges disappear? I buy lots of things off ebay and it only happens to nurse badges I was watching a rather beautiful Gloucester SEN badge which I had my bid on as well as one other bidder- only to find the seller had dated it and the badge hasn't reappeared. Last night 3 more delightful badges appeared A rather tempting Poole and 2 rare London area badges This morning all 3 had been dated with the usual excuse "item no longer for sale" I don't do conspiracy theories but I am assuming the sellers had been contacted and done an off ebay deal/ buy it now. I ma getting a wee bit fed up with this practice I complain to ebay but nothing happens and no doubt the same issue will occur many more times
Rant over and thanks for listening to this grumpy old woman!! >:(
I agree Sue,however I don't think it is Ebay that is mainly to blame here,Rather the vendor and the collector who is prepared to circumvent a fair trade.I only saw the Gloucester one so the others must have appeared and disappeared quite quickly? I do pine for the civilised days when we knew who was bidding and the collecting world was a lot more courteous even though we still competed for the same badges.Changing times but it doesn't make for an enjoyable collecting experience.I was discussing this very issue with a couple of older collectors who are thinking of thinning out their collections but the fact that unless you list a badge at a high price on Ebay you risk it going for next to nothing depending on which way the wind blows! >:(
Do You know, further to this theme,In the words of a T shirt "I am too old for this shit!"
I really wonder if these is much point to spending large sums of my money to try and record & preserve Nursing Heritage and have it sat in drawers gathering dust. When I think of the Trips to Venice or Nights at the theatre,or stays at the Savoy that I have missed out on,I do wonder why? Seriously, nursing history is vital because it is our heritage and "the past informs the present" It is only enthusiasts like you who will tell the story of nursing and all the work and finding that has gone in to the ongoing development of the profession.
1000 badges. Wow. I know I said I was going to Bourne mouth but I think I might come to Norfolk instead.....
I know that I am on holiday, but I couldn't resist this....
I once told Peter that if I won the lottery I would buy his whole collection and then ask him to keep it for me - a curator al magnifico!! The badges and memorabilia are irreplaceable - but so is the knowledge that goes with it - and the sheer lack of selfishness of people like Peter (and others right herein) when it comes to sharing.
If I do win that lottery there will be a new museum and Peter will be offered the job - I wonder what he would cost to employ? He would probably demand a knowledgeable staff - I wonder where he would get them?
My bets are on - I can only do the lottery when physically present in the UK - fingers crossed for nursing history!

I did like ebay and auction bids best, its fun but too many people in he know now through internet etc, so you will get all sorts of people trying to make some extra cash who will not be true collectors.
I would like a job when you win the lottery. I could make tea and stroke love badges in awe. I would be careful and reverent. I will get us a joint ticket next week when I am in UK. Fingers crossed.
We will all be watching you!!!
Will.
