Title: World War One Nurse:Ellen Measures
Post by: Escaliba on December 21, 2012, 05:43:43 AM
I am trying to locate any information about my grandmother, who was also a nurse (runs in the family).
Her name;Ellen Measures.
Trained as a general nurse, midwife and mental nurse.
I gather it was quite unusual to be that well qualified in those times.
She trained in Leicestershire before state registration.
Worked in the docks of East London during the first world war.
Lived in a nurses home in East London whilst working in that area.
She married late in 1917: I imagine that would have been the end of her nursing.
She did work as a community health sister near Salisbury: I have no idea when.
I would much appreciate any assistance in finding out anything at all about my grandmother's nursing years.
Because her time was prior to state registration, I gather this makes it a bit difficult to find records etc.

Good Luck with your quest, which may be a long one without more specific information. If you have her date of birth and approximate location you could try to find her in the census reports for 1911.This  would probably give you a hospital address as the majority of staff lived in.You then might see if any hospital records exist using http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/search.asp
This might then lead to other employment details. A marriage certificate may also help to track down details. As far as community nursing was concerned prior to the nhs she may have been employed by the Leicestershire county nursing association which was in operation from 1920-1946 see;http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O33129  for more information on early community nursing check out;http://www.districtnursing150.org.uk/history.htm

Once again good luck and do keep us informed of your results

Hi, what an i interesting search for you, I have free ancestry if youd like me to look anyting up...but you can do that for free in most library services- the archives at the royal london might help:http://www.bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk/about-us/museums-and-archives/the-royal-london-archives/
, as they now hold lots of now closed hospital records for that area...not sure if that includes nurses homes!... do you have a photo of her in uniform?
best of luck, Lizzie
