Title: Rare and early issue badges
Post by: myk1066 on December 28, 2011, 09:09:38 PM
Hi all
Just been finding through some back issues of the schools of nursing news letters and would like to share some things with you all.
In response to the Wallsall Genearal Hospital badge, I have one in my collection which is displayed in my multiply album.  See link below.

I also have one medal & one badge that I have not seen before.  The first is the St Helen's Midwives Defence Union, see link below.

The second is The League of Fever Nurses, see link below.

I also have a GNC SRN badge with an earlier issue date than the RSCN No 70 issued in April 1922(Feb 2010 newsletter), details as follows: Issued 03-02-1922 SRN 972 W.M. ANCELL.
Regards
Mike.

Thanks Mike, always good to see slightly different items as it encourages me to try and find out more about them.
I must admit that my knowledge of Midwifery History is patchy other than the finding of the Midwives Institut in 1881 and the Midwives Act of 1902.As far as Midwifery Defence Unions are concerned they seem to crop up in "The British Journal of Nursing" around 1907 but would love to find out more about these.
The League of Fever Nurses however interests me greatly and it seems to stem from the earlier Fever Nurses Association founded in 1909 who's aim was to fight for state registration.Once this was achieved however that organisation changed in 1933/34 to the League which appears to have been in operation through to the early 1950s.It had closed by 1953 and at a meeting of the Infectious Hospitals Matrons Association in march of that year it was proposed that registered fever nurses be invited to join the newly worded Infectious Hospitals Matrons and Nurses Association.
Well done on two very nice badges.

Association Supply Midwifery Training badge.
This is another badge in my collection of which I I have not seen before.  It is inscribed with the above wording on the reverse.  Follow the link below to view the badge.

I also have one of these,I believe hallmarked silver circa 1925(will check later).I think it relates to an organisation-The Association for Promoting the Training and Supply of Midwives who appear to have originated in 1902/03 and were around until the late 1920s.I presume that the badges may have been issued to members of the organisation?
There appear to be a wealth of different organisations and groups aimed at promoting standards in the different branchs of nursing and midwifery through the first half of the 20th century.Shame there isn't a summary of what they were and their rationale?
