Title: Mary Seacole Petition.
Post by: backman on October 25, 2018, 07:25:18 PM
There is currently a petition going the rounds to try and get Mary Seacole as the new face on the £50 note. The initial background to the petition contained a number of Historical falsehoods including the fact that she had been awarded the Victoria Cross from Queen Victoria herself!!! Whilst I do not wish to decry this lady's contributions in the Crimean War, she has been widely reinvented as a Nurse for which there is little or no real evidence       https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5047327/
I dislike the re writing of history to suit an agenda as before long these "facts" become established orthodoxy.I shall not be signing this petition.
Views anyone?

I haven't seen this petition but I do agree with pete I do remember watching a documentary about her and was amazed at some of the facts I do believe she wasn't a nurse but did contribute to the care of the soldiers in the Crimean She has a well deserved statue but there must be more deserving  ( dare I say???) women who could grace the £50...........for example Elizabeth Garret Anderson
alas not a petition i'll be signing
