Hello Sue no sorry, this is a very unique badge. quite large (I guess it looks more like a medal than a badge) but thanks for taking the time to undertake some research for us. I have seen the LRI Nurses League badge in the past, it is very different to the infirmary badge. Every good wish from Oz G & I :)

Sorry it has been so long in what appears to be responding. Still having problems accessing from this end and then finding my way around once in.
No all badges listed are not the badge. The badge speaking loosely looks somewhat like the medal style of Charing Cross Hospital with the long ribbon effect. The badge proper is a circular style that hangs from the ribbon. We are attempting to gain a copy of a photo of the badge.

I trained as a Registered Nurse (1981-1984) then Midwife (1985-1986).
I am applying to do a foundation degree in Early Years, and my Midwifery will count towards the course BUT I need to find out my course content!!
I trained at St Peter's School of Midwifery, which I think was linked to Guildford. Has anyone got any suggestions of how I go about tracking down the required information?
I contacted the English National Board and they said to try and contact where I trained, but isn't it all university based now?

I have looked at this one before and feel it is highly likely to be a Hospital item.The blue enamel cross is the same design as several other confirmed Nursing badges but the crest has me beaten so far.It is likely to be associated with a founder or benefactor of the organisation but my knowledge of heraldry is sketchy at best.I believe the coronet might denote a baronet but without going to a commercial website or the college of heralds to identify this the only chance of a formal identification may be if a simlar item comes up with established provenance.Good luck!

A missing badge/replacement sought....
Ann Carey is seeking to replace her missing training school badge.
Ann trained at the North Middlesex Hospital between 1988 & 1991, and her badge was from Enfield & Haringey School of Nursing - which has now changed to North London Joint College of Health Studies. She is currently Matron of a NHS surgical unit.
If you can help in any way please contact us as soon as. Ann is quite willing to purchase a replacement and has obviously put a lot of effort into trying to replace hers. So far without success..

Janet Stirling Koenig (nee Rawlinson) is seeking to replace her missing training school & UKCC Registration badges.
Janet trained at the Oldham School of Nursing - qualifying in January 1988 as RGN. She told us that she is returning to nursing after a break, taking a return to practice course ........ and would like to get replacement badges for when she is back in nursing full time.

And we have now heard from Ann Carey - the nurse who was seeking one of these badges, that she successfully bid and won the last one going on ebay (the one you pointed out above) on the 25th June!
She also said that she would not have known about that sale but for us. Nice one Peter - one very happy nurse with a very nice badge with no inscriptions - so Ann can now have the badge inscribed with her own details. She has promised a photo when she does.
If you read this Ann - Peter (backman) is the man to thank.... I had to admit that it wasn't me - I am in his deeply in his debt myself.
Seems to help people all the time - anyone want a 'bad back' fixed?!!

I'm sorry Lizzie but obtaining any missing nursing badge is largely a matter of perseverance and luck.In over 10 years of collecting I've seen seen less than five of the St Georges badge you were wanting to replace ever come up for sale.It really is unfortunate that you missed the recent one on ebay as another one may not come up again for years(equally one may appear this week).Good luck!

I can but echo Peter's (backman) advice. What he says is absolutely true - perseverance and luck! Perhaps a lot of both..
All emails we receive on the subject of lost badges - and we do receive a few, receive a standard reply. Here it is:-

Below is some advice to another nurse who has lost her badge, (She followed it and got another!). *This is general advice to anyone who has lost a badge, and any actions you may take must be on the acceptance that all responsibility is entirely your own:-
Sorry you lost your badge but don't give up on it - some things have a habit of turning up. Did it have your name on it?
I, or you, can post a notice on our website forum. You need to be a member. If you are not you can easily join and post your notice, it is straight-forward and free.
You could also join 'nursingbadges':-

Also free, and post a notice there... members are enthusiasts and may just be able to help.

Just in case it (or another) turns up there. You can also post a free 'want' advert on ebay, but of course have to pay for anything you buy; might have to bid - even if you saw your own badge, and might not win....
There is a final suggestion - ask the issuers - (I know, you did try and found them gone - but someone took them over – find out who) if there is any chance through them. Sometimes there is a member of staff from your old establishment with the new one who may be able to help, having retained an old badge as a momento.
You could also approach the manufacturers and ask them to make a duplicate - but this can be very expensive - even when it works.
*And there may be one other solution - have a replica made privately. One possible method here is to ask ebay member 'alicostelloe' to assist. He can be contacted here:-

However, if people are in search of hospital badges it might be worth writing to the Schools of Nursing within the Universities to ask. The only draw back is that there will probably be a hefty charge.

We didn't know about that possibility. Certainly many of those who seek help probably would'nt mind the hefty charge - though of course I don't think any simply did not collect in the first place, but rather lost the badges they already had. It is very useful information though. We do advise seekers to contact previous members of the teaching staff - the problems seem to be the difficulty in doing that - and sometime they are unable to help.

Lost badges...
This past year we know of at least three very happy nurses who have sought our help and realized their ambition. I wonder if they will to get along to wish SoN a Happy New Year?!
Not that it is necessary - we don't do it for pats on the back, but because the seekers are nurses. Bus drivers, with all respect, won't find a badge here (although by finding our advice even they may find one!).
But best to lay the credit where it is due - it has been the help, in one way or another, of our member/moderator Peter ('backman') which has swung the pendulum the right way.

I would echo these previous comments for anyone still seeking their lost treasure. The right amount of patience,determination,luck and probably money,may come up with the goods eventually.Congratulations to those of you who achieved your hunt this year,however I would recommend that you find a proper jeweller who for a small amount will add a safety chain to your pride and joy so that if you do wear your badge with pride you will have less of a chance of losing it again!!!!!

I have just spend the day organising and arranging my badges. I just got them back after they were on display at School of Nursing in Belfast for 3 years and am afraid to say the light or temperature has darker a few. I've cleaned up as best I can without using anything that might damage them.
I've transfered them from display case to small finding cabinet, pinned unto cloth (which hopefully will keep them dry and out of direct light).
I do have about 10 - 12 badges where pin is missing or broke. None of jewellers I've been too state they can repair them, so wonder if anyone in group can suggest anywhere reliable and reasonably priced. Preferably someone they have used themselves and personally recommend.
Regarding GS suggestion of writing to Universities about 'old' schools of nursing, I can confirm that at Queen's University of Belfast, we do have a few 'old' badges BUT only those belonging to schools of nursing at time of transfer. Again these only available to those who trained there and of course can prove it, for a small charge.

If St Peter's was affiliated with Guildford then the current version of that is Surrey University. It might be worthwhile putting a call into them. But to be honest, you followed a standard midwifery training at an approved school and were I assume judged fit to practice through examination. The UKCC (or whatever its current version is should be able to assist.

A request from the husband of a nurse trained at Brent & Harrow School of Nursing. Mrs Davies has lost her badge and Mr Davies, who says that he is not 'computer friendly' has requested our assistance. In order to assist as much as we can (one time only!) I have decided (bouyed up by a recent success - a badge located within 24 hours of our advice*)to follow our own advice and try to find Mrs Davies a replacement.
So, if anyone out there can help - now is the time to pull out the stops and help me live up to our own reputation as badge-finders.
I don't yet have any detail of the badge reverse inscriptions - but in any event it is unlikely that we will locate the actual missing badge. We are seeking a replacement....

Many moons ago my flat was burgled and one of the things that got taken was my jewellery box and my Barnet School of Nursing badge was in there. I'd be much obliged if the lovely folk here could keep an eye out for me as I'd love to be able to get another one.

hi - i can only access certain sites here at work cos Grampian NHS have blocked some as "unsuitable" and having no access to internet at home until 4th June when BT will arrive to set me up again!! - but I am sure I saw a Barnet badge on ebay- don't have number but try searching under nurse badges cos i'm almost sure it was there. I have to bring my laptop into work and use it on the wifi.... such a pain You don't realise how much you use the internet until you don't have it Enough of my ramblings i have to return to seeing patients.

Good to hear that you will be back soon Sue, you are missed.. But, well, want to try Ote? (Dont!). I am hopefully not tempting the gods but their service has become abysmal - couldn't get any worse - they just don't seem to have the people they need. Our net is fine usually, but our telephone - although we can hear callers - sends so much noise that the callers can't understand us. Skype saves the day but doesnt repair the Ote telephone. Not our fault says Ote. finding... And the bill stays the same!
But then I musn't grumble (and here I tempt the gods) 'schoolsofnursing' comes up every day without a hitch. I hope everyone else has the same experience....
