Hi,

Re the last news page information: (above) The expected date of publication of our first Nursing History (8th Inst - today) has had to be delayed for a few days more - the weather has interfered somewhat. Apologies. We will open the history as soon as possible. Please bear with us..

The competition - the closing date is not until the last day of this month - but the rules state that the first all correct answer is the winner. We already have the winner!

BUT, we also have an extra copy of the DVD 'Atonement' - the prize, so are keeping the competition open. If you have not given it a try have a look at the news page. Entry is free... St Thomas's as it was - just a few short clips but nonetheless stunning. Give it a go...

Hi.

A brief update on the last news page information as we fight our way towards the next one.

The competition for the DVD copy of 'Atonement' was won and the prize delivered/received by our own nursesue. The second copy was not won and will be used in our next competition.

Our first Nurse history, Mary Ellen Watkin of Bart's hospital, is still delayed - I think that it would be better to hold publication until 31st of this month. Apologies for the delay (unavoidable) but there is a plus side - we have received yet further information which can be incorporated  before we open the history.

We have also received an article on badge collecting from a respected collector - along with information about a finding book on badge collecting.

Don't miss the news; don't miss the article; don't miss news of the new book; and definitely don't miss our next competition.

WB.

Hi,

Please note that the website April 2009 news page went on-line earlier today.

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

Hopefully something to interest everyone. Enjoy the latest... And keep your eyes open for the next instalment of our first Nurse History - Mary Ellen (Mollie) Watkin of Bart's Hospital. Plus our second competition - again the prize is a copy of 'Atonement' with those superb clips of the Nightingale Hospital, sisters and probationers - living history! But the winner will, yet again, have to earn the prize...

There is comment on the topic of missing badges, both lost and stolen, prior to our publishing an article on what to do if you have lost yours. But please be aware that the site is made possible by voluntary effort - there are no paid staff - and that, at least in the short term, all missing badge queries will receive our standard reply. Mind, that isn't bad and may help replace a missing item. A register is a distinct possiblity. The notice board on the forum is available to post missing item memo's. Non-members will have to contact us - members can post direct. Membership does carry some benefits!

Plus much more news of course - why not have a look.

We are still desperately short of photographs of PTS and other nursing groups - all will be considered.

Very Best,
WB.

Hi,

Please note that the website October 2009 news page went on-line a couple of days ago.

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

Alongside the news we have also put up an article by member Ali Costelloe ('Asylum-seeker') about reproduction badges. It may well interest anyone who, for example, has lost a badge which has become rare, or which they simply can't find anywhere else. Or who simply can't afford the badge prices at auction sites. This article is well worth a read:-

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Articles/ACReplicaBadges1.htm

There is also a super photograph of a Royal Naval Hospital (Haslar) PTS (1965) sent in by Allyson Struthers (Nee Graham) who is hoping that it might revive lost contacts. If you think that you might be able to help don't hesitate to post a note for Allyson or to contact us.

*We are still desperately short of photographs of PTS and other nursing groups - all will be considered.

Plus there is much more news of course - why not have a look.

Very Best,
WB.

Ps. Our next News is Scheduled for December/January. Be aware - being around Christmas we will be running a couple of competitions and have some very nice prizes. Our competitions are open to all...

Hi.

A brief note to say that we are about to start prepping the December/January news.

If anyone has anything they would like including - especially PTS photographs (preferably named) - it will be gratefully received. We don't expect to be severely injured in the rush, but one never knows....

We do have a new article on nurse belt buckles being prepped - and there are several (some high prices too) on ebay right now.

There are three very nice examples in our member photo galleries - Worth a look - here's one:-

Look forward to this as belt buckles are something I haven't yet strayed into other than the couple of pics I've just added.I really would like to pick up an early nursing chatelaine as these seem to feature on several Victorian and edwardian images of nurses.I don't suppose Infection Control teams would be too pleased with these nowadays as I believe even the basic set of hospital scissors are frowned upon as an infection risk!

Thanks for another great newsletter.Things are pretty quiet here as I'm trying to get to grips with a new PC,gone for an iMac this time so having to adjust to the settings.
Still intend to part with some of my collection when I get the chance to finish setting up my store, although still tempting to add more.Has anyone seen the 3 Royal Worcester Nursing Sister figurines on ebay? Lovely items and would love to add the London and St thomas' figures to my collection but to steep for me!

Ladies first!

A wee tempter eh?!  You mean that there are prople in Scotland without the cash for a badge? Even a 'Tommes'?! Absolutely stunned I am...  I am afraid we will be passing Captain S on our way out on holiday to the UK (and all ports en-route) so if you both want an empty house on Crete for a month or so, you know where we are. Well, you don't, but our email will find us... Don't hand over too many pound just yet - you might the getting Dracs!! Are there still Scottish pounds?!....

Hi Peter, an excellent decision! Much of our site was done on a mac (by Adrian) although I remain a (5) Pc man. My nearest has been convereted to Apple IPad.  It does make me a little jealous but after having to learn all that Pc stuff I am very reluctant to change. Please do not do that Peter! I mean the figurines... A quick look on ebay didn't reveal them, but I saw enough to know that they were pure temptation... You will have gathered that we will be home in the UK starting June - but afterwards - know any good fish shops on our way back to Harwich?

Will.

wilf - alas hubby is on his own as Greek bureaucracy drives me mental!! We still have Scottish pounds and if the SNP get there way we'll soon have independance ( and what a mistake that will be) I have a 500 drachma note so am ok - do you think its enough to get me a tommies!!??
I wouldn't know where to start to set up my own website so envy you and Pete the ability to do that. As for not having the money to buy tommies well my pennies are off to the NMC saving pot as they are planning to increase registartion fees to £120 pa- LOL do i pay for petrol for my car or gas bill or NMC funds Decisions................. decisions ??? >:(
Pete good luck with your new computer I am still struggling with windows 7 ( do miss XP) and as wilf will testify W7 hates my camera and its such a rigmerole posting photos

Well, here we go again!! Our twenty-fifth news page went on-line but a few minutses ago - frozen (typing) fingers et al!

Hi Lizzie.

Thanks for that. It doesn't matter now - number 25 is the sie news, but even so I will just check that No 25 is in the archives and working.... Yes, there it is:-

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/Newspage025.htm

That's a relief!  Though I do owe some an apology - some people received 3 (THREE!) copies of the notice.... I will have to find the glich, but it may just be the mail system as I can't find a fault so far. But, if anyone did get three copies, apologies.

But at least there is only one to actually read.

Very Best.
Will.

wonderful as always The piece about SEANs really interesting I have a Selly oak SEAN as well as a few others including a Mansfield Victoria and Forest hospitals one. Its really weird how some things never change the debate over nurse training and what constitutes a nurse's duties never really changes and a shortage of nurses isn't something new - now for a long quote

"The future pattern of nurse training is debatable and no two nurses will necessarily agree about it. Too many questions remain unanswered and too few statistics are available. From 1860 onwards hospitals have complained that they are short of nursing staff, but what they mean is that they are short of "pairs of hands". No one has ever defined,to everyone's satisfaction, the duties of a trained nurse, the true concept of a student nurse,non-nursing duties, the nurse/patient ratio in different types of units or how to relate supply to demand. In the 1920s after the passing of the Registration Act, it was hoped that patients could be cared for by a staff of registered Nurses and probationers in training: in the 1940s the hopes lay with the new grade of Enrolled Assistant Nurse"

By 1951 the Assistant Enrolled Nurses Committee was asked to review the SEAN training and 1952 saw the introduction of written exams (previously a quiz!) 1956 saw a trial of both pupil nurses and student nurses working together on the same wards and December 1960 a bill was introduced to change the title It seems that the word assistant was off putting to potential recruits. 1962 saw the introduction of part time training for SENs.

Thanks for that Sue.  Personally I always had a very soft spot for SEN's - and for some of the A/Ns whom I once helped convert to SEN.  May were the salt of the profession. Whilst climbing my particular ladder (from student onwards) I was often indebted for the help and support given by SEN's - many of whom simply didn't want SRN status. I often suspected that this was mostly because they did not have the academic qualifications. What a waste that was - I would not have complained if I had needed to receive the standards of care they displayed....
