I trained at RAF Halton in 1977 (course 100) and i have always said knowing what i know now i would still do it all again. I loved the hands on training and the stints in the school of nursing. The social life wasn't bad either, Wendover had loads of pubs and the Hospital had a great social club. I can remember the females on camp were out numbered by the males by about 50 - 1 so we were spoilt for choice and never short of a date. I now work for the Navy and have since returned to University twice to specialise in Occupational Health. I would love to hear from former PMRAF nurses.

Hi Miriammaureen,

Sorry that I am not one of the PMRAF nurses you are hoping to hear from.  I'ts early days in the forum yet - I am sure that you will get replies as we become better known. The search engines are taking note of our presence.

I thought that perhaps you would not mind if I filled the space just a little.  When putting this site together I really did not know just how little we knew about the armed forces nurse training and hospitals.  Looking at the Nursing Badges site the other day I visited a couple of links I found there. One was possibly about the hospital you trained at:-

That site seems all about derelict hospitals.

On a brighter note I have a couple of nice first day postal covers - one for RAF Ely - shows a bi-plane over the cathedral and celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Princess Mary's RAF Nursing Service. British forces PO and dated 24 Dec 1972 - or maybe it's 1973?

The second celebrates the same thing - but says that it is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of PMRAF Nursing service Charter - has a picture of a large bi-plane (maybe a bomber) and a VC 10.

Both signed by the Matron-in-Chief (BM Ducat; Amos Dean of Ely; and the pilots - so the covers must have been flown.  Hope that fills a little space until the forces nurses find you.

We need to know a lot more about all the forces' hospitals here on the site. Any help you are able to give will be very welcome.

WB.

I'm not a PM but trained as a physio at ICM starting in Jul 77.  Went on to serve until 1996 and made redundant.  Now working in Scotland in a Health Centre but like you have many wonderful memories of Halton and the old Soak (social club).
