Having obtained a spare London Hospital badge is there anyone interested in doing a swap for some hospital/nursing badges? Serious offers only, not after cash. It's the one on the left of the photo.
Mike
What sort of LH badge?
p.s. what name and year?
Unissued, no inscription, SRN version, HM Silver.
Hi Mike, how did you find those?, I have never heard of unissued ones like that from the London being sold off before-they are always named!-does your seller have more?
Hi Lizzie
Seller has no more, not asked her where she got them from?
You interested in swaps?
Mike
Hi Mike, no thanks..not unless you want to swap a SEN LH ??...have seen plenty, just not one to buy... I can live in hope that one will come along .
Lol, ok, if you have the Nightingale SEN I'd swap but I live in hope too. Do you know how long the LH SEN were issued for & from what date?
Cheers
Mike
HI Mike, I do have a Nightingale SEn, but its not for swaps! Regards the other info, it is being loaded by Will in an article i have written about the LH badge and how it evolves... i think that your questions will be answered in there! (not neccessarily for set numbers, and Peggy is sadly now dead who ran the course for many years.
Ok, that's fine but if you do know anyone willing to swap a Nightingale SEN for a London SEN let me know. I look forward to your article, you could always PM me with the answer, discretion assured lol.
Thanks
Mike
I've got an LH badge + a number of sets that I know your interested in which I would consider exchanging for any Cheshire items that you have and I'm currently looking for.
Hi Barry
What are you looking at from me & what have you got?
Cheers
Mike
I'd prefer to do this face to face if possible as I know you don't live far away from me and I'd be quite willing to travel.
Hi Lizzie
The HM on the EN badge is as follows
JRG, Anchor, Lion and what appears to be a letter L, do you know what year this is then?
Mike
do you know I think I prefer the EN version. Any chance of a photo of the hallmarks especially the date letter? To work out the date as it depends on the font and the "shield" in which the letter is sitting. The rest is easy Anchor = Birmingham assay office and the lion is silver As for JRG that cold be John Gaunt but the London Hospital set is wonderful
Hi Sue
Ill load one later of the hallmarks, I know the letter L has a fancy loop at the top of it.
Mike
after supper im will look up in my little silver mark book, sounds nearer the mark on my letter... how much does it weigh?
Not sure about the weight, is that important?
only because it be lighter if a more recen badge..just interesting thats all...also please can you weigh the SRn version, and I can weigh mine(1984) as I have a finding that they got a bit lighter-manufacturers changed.
Fancy L is the year after mine ...1985.
Ok Lizzie, the RN version does feel lighter than the older version I have in my collection. Do you have the EN version Sue?
I will , ask a friend..
Very simply the L and Birmingham hallmarks narrow this one down to either 1960 or 1985 depending upon the font and shape of base.I would suspect the later perhaps?
Lots of good little books such as Millers or Jacksons which detail the different marks, all invaluable for dating many badges otherwise unmarked.Very nice acquisition!
Thanks for that Backman. Ill upload a pic of the hallmarks but it won't be today as I'm on a long day! I weighed them last night & each badge weighed 15g, does that seem right? Not sure if the scales were correct
Hi, as SEN training didnt start unitl later in the 60's ..and curly L is the same style as my own badges hm i feel it is probably /likely to be the 1985 one.
alas i don't have a LH SEN badge but i think it looks stunning
Do you have the Nightingale SEN Sue?
alas nor that one either Mind you it took me about 5 years to get the SRN version but i do have some lovely SEN badges from other hospitals including the lovely green fife thats just gone on
Hi guys.
I've posted a pic of the London EN badge, obverse, showing the HM, on the gallery.
Cheers
Mike
Hi, Mike I hope you saw the answers in the latest article that Will editted etc onto SON?- about dates of SEN at the London?
I did, many thanks Lizzie. Excellent article by the way.
myk1066 give me a ring on 01244543892 I think we could assist one another.
Hi, just to say that I have noe read a differnet date for when SEN training finished at the London- 1984? ( but is that last set starting or finding, ie 1984/ 1986??), I got the other date from a reputable source....will check elsewhere.
Re your London Hospital badge article Lizzie.
The Project 2000 badge that was only given to two cohorts, the one that has red & white links, is this a rare badge would you say? Do you know how many would have been issued?
Cheers
Mike
HI, white and black links... I dont know how many, records like that are closed /restricted access as people are still alive, it might be somewhere. I get the impression it was not popular--- why do you have one?
Yes I have one or 2, wanna swap?
Hi Mike, i would like one..but it depends on price, particularly having done the article/trained there etc.
I doubt that I have anything that you do not badge wise (I used to look at your Multiply site a lot)
best wishes, Lizzie
Well I am open to suggestions, you must have something I haven't?
Mike ;)
Lizzie
Do you have the Eastern & German Hospital EN School badge at all?
Hi Mike , no sorry I do not.
:(
ps I would still like to buy one.
Lol, any Coventry or Clwyd to tempt me?
Hi Mike, yes to both, however ..not for that white and black links badge..only for a SEN LH! (it is un-named !)
Hi Lizzie
Which badges are they that you have?
Cheers
Mike
Hi Mike, on reflection I will hang on to what i have... its good to have dreams; you never know I may find one in a junk shop1 :)
thanks
hate to say this guys but there's a London SEN just gone on ebay!!! any best on its final selling price??? :o
?HIgh? Where has he got it from??
I wonder too about its final price & where he got it from! Me thinks there may be a flood of these badges coming onto the market!
Just checked on EBay, the London SRN says it is hall marked for 1995 and has reached £41 and the SEN is hall marked for 1985 and has reached £51. Neither has names engraved on back.
I may be an optomist but I reckon they'll both go for around the £100 mark.
I reckn the sen more... and the unnamed Rgn may go for more if someone is replacing a lost/stolen one.
re Pupil Nurse training at the London;
The last Pupil Nurse qualified in 1990, from the Princess Alexandra College of Nursing and Midwifery. (just one Pupil that year-they had started in 1989)-there were many more the year before.( source, archivists at The Royal London hospital Archives). I assume that they received the "Old " LH style badge-SEN as on ebay at present.
So the information in my article is correct!
Hi Lizzie, am I reading you last comment right, just one pupil nurse qualified in 1990? Can you remind as to when the LH started pupil nurse training?
Cheers
Mike
Yes Mike,, only 1 person, in 1990, but "many" the years before.
I cannot remember when exactly but the answer is in my article - !
The London EN has topped £100
Mike
Probably too much if the vendor does indeed have further badges? We have seen(and been victim to)multiple badges coming onto the market several times over the years. It goes to show that a badge is only worth what an individual is prepared to pay. Scarcity is only one factor in the price a badge will fetch.I think the highest cost (ordinary) badge that I've seen was a boxed Nightingale which reached £1500.I think I'd prefer some of the unrecognised gems which still crop up from time to time.Anyway It's only money!!!!
I agree & I've also paid top whack for badges only to see them come along like London busses! One that springs to mind was the Broadgreen that kept appearing a few years ago, whilst not in the same league as the prices of the LH & Nightingale they were pretty frequent at the time. Anyone want to swap me some badges for my EN LH? God loves a tryer.
Mike ;D
Hi guys.
Guess what, another London gone on sale. Is the market, so to speak, going to be flooded with The London badges, could this see the crash in prices on ebay?
Check out the link below.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=141056957610
Mike
£180 for the London Enrolled nurse badge!
Hi Myke,
Seems a definite possibility (finding the market that is) since the badges are un-named. Maybe someone has a job-lot of un-issued badges somewhere. For me they are of little value (I certainly would not pay anything like the current prices for an un-named badge) as it is really simply a badge - no history.... I seem to remember a couple of un-named Nightingales went for quite reasonable sums in the not too distant past.
I know that some badges are un-named league of nurses/RCN etc etc, and are perfectly collectable as such. I also admire the sheer craftsmanship of many badges, and might certainly be tempted if I had a gap in my collection (as I am sure that we all do), but as a general rule I try to avoid all badges which appear to have no history, rightly or wrongly. You pays your money, you take your choice!
I have a brother-in-law who collects military badges, many of which were not named, and he spends I know, a lot of time trying to ensure that badges he buys are not reproduction. But he also has a fair collection that he can be fairly sure are... There are many factors to consider when buying non-named nursing badges though, and the space here isn't sufficient to deal with the topic. Perhaps it could make a topic in our 'collectors' column on the news page. Perhaps.....
Un-named badges? For myself - only where they should be so. Otherwise - no history, no badge! But I do acknowledge that others may not feel the same way, I just enjoy seeking the history, and reveling in the finding that a badge I am holding has some...
I too am surprised it fetched that much.I agree with Will that these are probably unissued items. It will be interesting to see what the next ones fetch, I wouldn't mind one but won't pay this much on principle.
have noticed a very nice North Staffs Royal infirmary on ebay Buy it now for £225!!! :o
I saw it too Sue, why is it so much do you think? Congrats also to person who got London Hospital EN badge tonight for £180, they pipped me at the end but heigh ho have to tell myself how much I've saved!! Why does this badge collecting get into your system and sometimes over rule your head.
I've seen the North Staffs too, very expensive. The London EN is very nice though & a rare one, only the 2nd I've seen in my few years of collecting. Reading Lizzies article makes them limited compared to some other hospitals, who trained Pupil Nurses for quite a few years before the London.
Mike
And the Staffs badge is with enamel loss to the bar! The problem is that when vendors see Nursing badges go for high prices for the rare items, that they use those prices as a benchmark for their own less rare lots.At least, whilst Sally Bosely's prices can be high, they are based upon rarity and condition.Unfortunately it is down the collector as to what we continue to pay that drives the market, and yes heart will often overrule head when it comes to it!!!! As long as the buyer is happy with their purchase the end price is only usually an issue for the underbidder.
On the basis of these prices is anyone interested in 850 assorted badges, cost somewhere between £20,000 and £150,000?
Hi Peter.
850 eh?! Gift-aid them to me at the usual address... I promise to keep them safe!
Will.
What only 850, I think that my current medical insignia collection is somewhere in the region of 20,000 +++ items and still growing!!
A lifetimes work,Barry? How many years have you been collecting? I know that when I picked up my first badges in the 1980s they were relatively easy(and cheap)to acquire.Unfortunately family commitments at the time meant that I could only dabble.Once I could afford to start collecting seriously the prices had rocketed and the supply had dried up.I believe you you and Edelweiss and perhaps a couple of others are surely the largest holders of Nursing badges in the UK,much more so than the RCNs holdings.
I have to say on most peoples behalf we would love to see more of them on here if you get the chance.Feel inspired to produce a book?
I started collecting in 1979, and was offered and purchased 80 Hospital/Nurses badges for £40 in 1980, I principaly have a military medical, dental & veterinary, insignia collection worldwide plus all allied medical trades i.e. Physio, X-ray, Theatre, Imunity, Ambulance, Para-Medics, Etc.
One area I'm particulary intrested in being buttons and Doctors insignia ie. B.M.A. Etc.
I've just been sorting through some of my badges, not sure how many I have but I bet it's around 1000 mark including all the GNC badges & repeats as a result of collecting sets, there are probably more in all honesty! What's nice about looking through them is the surprise when you see one you didn't realise or forgot you had.
Mike
He won't remember but I can remember speaking to Barry in the early 80's, in either Hong Kong or Belfast about his collection which was quite extensive then. My Interest then was numbered infantry buttons and others pre 1881, that conversation stimulated me to look out for medical stuff. The majority of my collections went some years ago for a tidy sum but when I see some prices being raised I wish I had kept them.
Hello, I was in Belfast from 1982 - 1985 and Hong Kong 1986 - 1988, for some reason although I've sold some of my collection at a profit it still seems to have got larger.
Hi Barry.
Sounds a little Irish to me Barry!! I wonder - if I build a new shed can I take care of your collection too please? I have a new method of keeping them secure - I cast them into a 1 ton concrete block, let it set, and then leave the door open so I can hear anyone using a cold chisel and club hammer...
But seriously, my own (meager) collection continues to grow too - even though I only seek particular badges - but like Peter, and no doubt others, collecting nursing badges has become an expensive hobby. But I would give my eye teeth for a genuine LH SEN with inscribed detail.... No harm in wishing I suppose....
Will.
The latest LH, 'one of the new ones' has reached £102, check it out and there are still 3 days to go.

Is there an opinion that these un-named London Hospital badges are originally from the same source, unused stock?
Mick
my own collection is tiny compared to some others I am concentrating on Scottish and brummie badges but did get a nice Leicester recently ( photo to appear soon!!). My hospital badge is unnamed and undated and I'll never part with it As for SEN/ SEAN badges I seem to have a wee collection slowly building and am watching for matching SRN badges! Oh and just as you think you've got the matching set for a particular hospital another one creeps out of the woodwork ;D
ps - bad news ottypup has listed a LH SEN , just love the Victorian Trained Nurse Association Gold Badge but am thinking its Australian and there's a lovely tommies pill box just gone on!!!!! so many items and so few pennies to buy them all!!!! :-*
Barry
Do you have any repeats of your military nursing badges? I'd love to complete my nursing lot from the military, the Royal Navy ones (not the 2 blue & green round versions that have been popping up recently) from Portsmouth!
Do fellow badge collectors feel that the 'new' batch of LH badges are worthless compared to the older ones? If you didn't have one in your collection would you buy one? How does the LH Nurses League feel about them?
Mike
I suppose there are comparisons to be made between the collecting of Nursing badges and that of Military badges(a much larger hobby).Original attributable and named awards are generally far more collectable than unnamed items. The scarcity of some military items has led to them being reproduced and restrikes and copies abound(this effectively stopped me collecting Polish Military items several years ago)
I wouldn't say the newer badges are worthless because undoubtedly some collectors will buy them, however they should probably be worth less than a named issued item.I would (and probably will )bid but my maximum price will probably reflect that difference. The market is however extremely fickle and I think they may fetch more than we expect,it being a case of supply and demand. If I really had money going spare I would be investing in some of the MilitaryNursing sets coming up for auction at Bonham's in October which I believe will go for far more than their estimates appealing to the military collector
It may be some considerable time before named ones come on the market- and even when named it is not easy to research the person as it will be too recent for work records . Not many of these were issued? 20/year for only 20 years.... ( pupil sets were very much smaller than the set i started in and ? only twice /year)..so it is perhaps an only chance to have one of these in a collection... it is a stunning badge, with or with out a name. I think the more recent LH srn version is not as thick quality/ looks different from mine which is 10 years older, but the SEn ones are by a different company (pinches)and have the original brighter red enamel- which i personally prefer.--
Those Bonhams sets are wonderful-as are the prices... so high, what a collection he had!
Hi.
In reply to myke's question about the value of the current LH badges on ebay.
I would not regard any genuine nursing badge as worthless - someone has often spent considerable time and effort on the initial project; designs and manufacture are often superb and the final product intricately crafted. Even the more modern versions are usually well worth collecting. The question for me personally is quite simply does a badge meet my own collecting criteria? For me:-
1. It must be demonstrably genuine. I would only buy an un-named badge or otherwise un-inscribed badge if I had a very special reason for doing so.
2. I would always seek a badge with some history special (of the nurse or organization) attached.
3. The badge condition is secondary. Any badge can be graded - rather like coins and medals - but although perfection is a plus I prefer a badge with a history attached - even if I have to find it.
I see nothing at all wrong with collecting un-named badges - there is always the history of a badge itself - it's design and manufacture, and I have seen some excellent reproduction nursing badges which could fill a whole in a collection. Temporarily or otherwise. I really don't know if I would buy a reproduction - I do possess just one but really for the sake of possessing one. An excellent badge let down only by the modern pin finding.
But I agree with Peter 'Original attributable and named awards are generally far more collectable than unnamed items'. It depends quite simply on why one is collecting nursing badges, and in the final analysis on what a badge is worth to the individual collector. Personally, the LH SEN currently on ebay is not for me, but it may certainly be prized by another - perhaps a nurse who has lost her own.....
Will.
Interesting comments, I am not a nursing badge collector, I'm a magpie and dip in and out of whatever interests me, my main collections were military buttons and medals. I would imagine that for a majority here, as in medal collecting, there is an interest in attributable items. I used to think that un-named items make good gap fillers but there is always that niggle that you want the item that has been touched or worn by the individual and your collection isn't really complete until you find it, the collection stares back at you accusingly. Or maybe that was just me.
Mick
With regards my military medical items I do have some spares however I don't have a great deal of Naval hospital insignia and I know that I don't have a Netley Hsspital S.E.M.N. badge (if they exist), a R.A.F. nurses belt-buckle and the current Defence Dental Service Hygienist badge.
Hi Lizzie
Do you know how the LH Nurses League feel about the 'new' badges?
Mike
Hi Mike, sorry I do not know!
Thanks for that Lizzi.
I just wondered wether the league could lay claim to unissued badges. Was the London similar to St Thomas' in that hospital badges should be returned from original owner on retirement/death of the recipient of a LH badge?
Mike
Hi, that is no longer the case- badges are now considered the recipients and then their families property.Lizzie
Hi Lizzie
Re LH pupil nurse training, if I wanted to know exact numbers of those that qualified as EN's, who would I need to contact?
Regards
Mike
The archivists; if you google all contacts on internet.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LONDON-HOSPITAL-BADGE-/200964026732?pt=UK_Collectables_Badges_Patches_MJ&hash=item2eca63b16c
The above is a link to the latest London already £132!
did anyone get the lovely tommies pill box that has just sold on ebay - it looked lovely
Not me!
Lizzie, do you know the weight of your London badge compared to the much earlier versions?
Mike
I think it is about 13g, our scales are not very good on small amounts- can vary.will try and compare it with mary pinsents Lh badge.
Hi Lizzie
Thanks for that. I used some small electronic scales & both the unissued RN & EN badges weighed 15g, will weigh my older one to compare.
Mike
Hi Mike, sorry , studying now so finding things in, but did weigh them last night:
my badge: 1984; 14g
a early small LH, (probably of the first 1931 ish lot; 18g !-- it does have a more substantial pin than the others, but no safety pin like both mine and the other early one0
another early small LH (she moved away from the London in mid 1930's so assume she had bought it before then, but it is slightly more polished than mine and the other............ 14g
hope that helps, ..but our scales do vary.. and are electronic
Lizzie
Thanks for that Lizzie
I'll have to weigh mine again & check on their dates to see, as well, if there are weight differences through the ages.
Mike
Ps 1st two are both Pinches, mine is fattorinis....
now how about this for a conundrum.....
The SEN LH badges around at the moment are all H/m for Pinches....but I think that they sold up in the late 1960's...hence fattorinis taking over and the red colour change, as on mine.
So the question is , if pinches went bust/sold up were the badges not H/m and passed onto fattorinis??, and then hallmarked etc at the later date ???
Hope that makes sense...... ???
Lizzie
The plot thickens!
Would it be worthwhile contacting Fattorini to ascertain this?
Mike
Thats a good idea, I look forward to hearing what they tell you? How did you get on with the Archivists at the London??
Hi Lizzie
I've emailed them & asked how many EN's qualified from, the LH, commencing to ceasing pupil nurse training.
Regards
Mike
£105 that last LH EN went for!
As anticipated the prices are dropping with each appearance of another badge. The question is,is it a bargain at £105 or overpriced at £180? I'd like one but still hanging on.
Its the million dollar question, how many ,more of each does he have? It may become like the liverpool eye hospital badge...
Nothing to do with the current batch of Liverpool Eye Hospital badges but I have two oldish strikings of this badge.
I think that the LH EN badge are a good badge to have, considering the rarity, limited run and for how long the LH trained Pupil Nurses, inscribed or not & bearing in mind the SoN would have just ordered a batch not finding the demise of EN"s perhaps, at the time of ordering.
Regards
Mike
Further to my last post, the archivist at the London, Jonathan, informed me that pupil nurses were trained from 1968 to 1990, only 22years, with 540 nurses qualifying as EN's in that period. I have emailed him again with a few more questions which I'll post on here when he replies.
Mike
Thanks!- i thought it might be a few more, say about 600 by geustimates so it is good to now accurately.
Hi Lizzie
You may be nearer the mark with your guesstimate as the archivist says there are some records missing. I've had a reply to my further questions & will summarise them & post on here on my return to the UK from Mallorca.
Yet more London RN & EN badges going on sale, reminiscent of other job lots in the past! The seller states they are the last ones he has, watch that space!!
My London is from May 1937 - Aug 1940 and weighs 16.28g Hope this helps
What's going on - I'm suffering from London Hospital badges before the eyes!! Just checked the auction site, now there is an SRN at £100, an SEN at £95 and a pair SRN and SEN at £200. None are named to any nurse.
There's an influx of them at the moment, I managed to get the EN version from a seller on ebay along with the RN version, both unmarked. It seems it a "Broadgreen" incident all over again, let's call it Londongate!
Mike
followed by a very close "st Bartsgate" I remember the broadgreen badges very well
What were the Broadgreen badges?
A couple of years ago there was a seller who had skip full of Broadgreen Hospital badges & it seemed there was a never ending supply of them.
Mike
Sound a bit like the run on Cheshire Hospital badges!!
And Prior to that a few years ago we had the East Roding badges which I regret not getting more of now as they appear quite scarce now.I know that in a couple of hospitals where I have worked when i approached what had been their school of Nursing they had boxes of unissued badges. One still does, despite my offering to take them off their hands!
What were the Cheshire badges & what were the East Roding ones? Any pics of them?
Mike
The Cheshire ones, where Parkside Hospital, Macclesfield, the Arrowe Park hospital badges some Birkenhead and Cheter/Wirral, I believe an ex-nurse tutor aquired quite a large number.
whilst I agree with all the previous comments re the LH SEN I just couldn't resist Its not named but still a nice piece and think I would have regreted it if I didn't get one via a nice seller as an off ebay deal. It is hallmarked silver and weighs in at 13.89g Hallmarks are for Birmingham Silver JRG ( ?? j r gaunt) and dated for 1983. Someone i know got the SRN version and they tell me its 13.62g Fattorini of Birmingham silver and dated 1995 Hope this helps
Yet more LH RN & EN badges gone on again, it's definitely Londongate!
and seeing bokojnr's Coventry reminds me of all those that appeared a few years ago
It's as if you had just bought Leonardo's Mona Lisa and then found out that he had produced 20 more! But does that detract from the one masterpiece in your own collection, that's the question?
Regarding badgegate incidents, if multiple badges do keep coming on the market, such as Broadgreen, LH, Liverpool United Hospitals etc, I will often buy one or two more to use as swaps, so it's not all bad.
Mike
it's not to so much as the quantity being sold but the decision you make about the badge. Its a badge you really want from an area that you like and you perhaps spend a little more than anticipated only to find a whole drawerful form the same seller. The Coventry is a example of this the seller has 3 different badges ending at the same I made the choice of the Coventry and just missed out on his EBH - after that 25 coventry badges appeared for a fraction of what I paid and i didn't get the only EBH he had Since then the EBH has been on ebay (from a different seller) and went for more than I could afford. I still love the Coventry and did as Myk suggested got some more and did some swapping but am a little peeved at missing out on the EBH As for my London SEN - its a wee Leanardo gem ::)
Guess what, another LH gone on tonight at £14.99. I wonder how many he really has because I'm sure he's told me he hasn't anymore after his last one he put on!
Mike
This is vexing a few people, why not get in touch with the hospital and ask for information about them being sold off. A FOI should do it.
Mick
Hi, I doubt that would work- see my article about the badges, it mentions the changes to the schools of nursing and mergers with Barts.there have been so many changes over the past twenty years. The SON moved from one site to another about 1 year ago, when we saw badges at City there were not spares like that- may be some were sold off before that.
I agree Liz,if my own experiences of requesting information are anything to go by,a FOI will probably just demonstrate that in most University Nursing departments the information just wasn't recorded. The rush from Schools of Nursing to University Faculties of Health means that much of the history that preceded them was just abandoned along with badges, records and photos.A few individuals may have salvaged some of these but as older Tutors retired, much of the information was just not retained.I was lucky that some 20 years ago I managed to keep a couple of the older Southampton badges from one of the tutors there but this is becoming less and less likely with the passage of time. There are occassionally finds such as the London Cache of items but once gone thats it!
Is the direct descendent the Royal London Hospital?
Mick
yes, but all nurse training is at city uni .Barts and the london merged and as did there training... the article shows the badge changes. barts site (league0 also shows most of the badges, not sure it has the latest city (on the gallery)
If anyone hasn't seen the website it is well worth checking out.It is nice to see such an active Nurses League and it is a great shame many other hospitals haven't managed to do similar:http://www.rlhleagueofnurses.org.uk/index.html
Sorry- I meant the Barts league site is good for the badges:http://bartsleagueofnurses.org/photo-gallery
(not sure that ours RLH )has even an EN badge on it)... but does have some linksto here!
Hi.
Perhaps the universities per se will get the idea and start more leagues Peter.
Will.
Well folks todays badge went for £72, too much for me I'm afraid. The latest is now £15.49 but no doubt that will go up rapidly in the last few minutes just like todays.
and the sen went for £78 +postage would love to get the sen version one can always dream
A London Hospital has just gone on ebay tonight, it's dated 1980-1982 & issued to Alison Peacock. Is this a badge issued to an EN, if so were both types of badges issued to EN's?
Mike
No, I dont think so , only after conversion; did the archives mention this when you emailed them?
Hi Lizzie
They didn't but then I didn't ask but I will.
Mike
Guess what.....................you guessed it. I wonder how many he really has? ??? ??? ???
Yes there are now another 2 Registered and 1 Enrolled badges up for auction!!
Both buyers seem to have loads, and of all the variations....
Latest registered LH badge has gone for £77! I'm never going to get one at this rate. I thought that the prices would drop with the glut of them.
Current London Hospital badge on fleece @ £155. Anyone one considering bidding let me know, pm me, as I have a spare to swap!
I was up in my loft( archive/library/Treasure room)earlier today and came across a number of Nursing league journals including one from The London Hospital from July 1989.I have taken the liberty of adding a photo of the Presidents badge to the albums but I don't think this is one that we will aim for(unless there are a drawer full somewhere???)
Well done, I saw our president wearing it last month, it is stunning!
Nice to see it is still being used.No chance of borrowing it then Liz? What isn't clear is whether it is mounted on a silver or gold Background?
It reminds me of when I served on some of the RCN bodies, the chair of the Occupational Health Forum had her chain of office with her after a conference, which rather resembled a mayoral chain and was pretty weighty.I dare such regalia are now consigned to the vaults but each one was a work of art in itself
tHAT would be nice, it is silver , I think...and is much nicer in the flesh! I ought to ask to take a photo!, but will look inside the league mags to see if anyone is wearing it.
Oh I'm so glad I don't collect London nurses/hospital badges other than Military and fortunately apart from some Naval ones I have examples of all the others.
£71 & £77 for the London Hospital Enrolled Nurse & RN badges, bargains in terms of what the have been going for.
Oh & another LH gone on but no EN version, must have sold all the EN ones!
£77 already for the RN LH. I've a spare for swaps if anyone is interested?
Hi MYK 1066
Please can you contact me again re swaps for your badge? I did try to respond to your previous message twice but didn't work. My email address is on my profile. Thank you. Rosemary
A nice set of the 2 LH badges just gone in ebay, it's like a never ending story!
Hi all
The original seller of the LH badges has sold me a few more LH badges. Is anyone interested in doing swaps for badges I do not have in my collection?
Mike
£24.00 for starters for the latest one that's gone on tonight!
The price is rising, how much do you think it will go for? I have the same badge to swap if anyone is interested!
I think the market price is dropping, £56 the last new unissued badge went for!
am wondering how many there are left ??? someone got a good price
The seller sold me a few that I'm going to use for swaps so who knows how many are left out there!
I also have the EN version to swap, anyone interested?
The latest LH that's on fleece, is it one of the new unissued ones do we think? Currently on at £21.
To be honest, other than the fact it gives some collectors an opportunity to acquire a badge that might normally be too costly for them,I'll be glad to see an end to these. If I were the vendor I might decide to hold any residual stock until the market settles and new collectors come on line.
I would much rather see other badges come out of the back of granny's drawers. There are still a lot of LCC badges hidden out there and looking at the number of prize badges awarded via articles in Nursing journals of the day,a fair number of gold ones.I had another dealer tell me that he had sent a Gold Bristol Royal Infirmary medal for met down recently as he didn't think anyone collected them!!!
Perhaps a mission this year is to raise the profile of the nursing badge and it's place in our history so that old forgotten badges can be released into the wild or at least identified and catalogued to be appreciated by the families of those nurses that earnt them?
Whilst I do have a few from the original seller, of both the EN & RN, of the new batch of unissued LH badges, I think I will put them to the back of my cupboard for prosperity and heed the advice of a wise owl.
Mike
£82 was the final price for the last new unissued LH RN badge, so they are still commanding relatively high prices!
Another one by same seller gone on tonight!
makes you wonder how many she has and where did she get them from but at least I got some nice badges at a good price
Re the LH that went on a few days ago, I have some to swap for ones I haven't got.
M.
have just discovered a rather nice London hospital badge in the USA complete with box if anyone is interested
I've emailed the seller to see if they know how it ended up in the US.
The seller responded & they know nothing about the badge or person it belonged to or how it came to being in the US!
2 more LH badges gone on tonight, both versions. :o
A nice 1943 LH gone ion ebay, is it in the right box?
Mike
One of the new unissued LH's RN version sold for £122. Not a bad price considering the recent finding of them, I could make a mint on the ones I bought from him but I'm holding on for prosperity (or swaps). The EN version went relatively cheaply considering they are rarer!
I aksed about box: Box front - black with a gold band around the edge (no writing), the big one I have i am pretty sure has the LH name on the box, and I think the badge fits better....
Sarah
I've just looked at my 2 different sized LH a SoN badges, the much larger badge does have a bigger box, which is square in shape, it's black with a gold coloured wavey border with the LH crest & the lettering The London Hospital School of Nursing in gold. The inside of the box is lined with black velvet & the badge lies on top with a fine groove for the pin to fit into, it isn't a recessed circle like the one on ebay. The inside of lid of the box is lined in cream silk & has gold lettering John Pinches London encircled with a diamond shape.
The smaller LH badge is also in a black box but has rounded corners, the inner lining is exactly the same as the above. The external lid of the box again is the same as the above minus the gold coloured wavey border.
The recent batch of LH badges come in the usual cheap plastic boxes, dark bade, foam inner & clear lid.
I suspect the badge box on ebay isn't original.
Hi Myk,
You will find dated photographs of the boxes you mention here:-
http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections17.htm
A little way down the article.
Will.
£235 the LH badge went for in the wrong box, nice price.
Hi.
I think that the box was older than the badge myk? But yes, I think the wrong box too. I didn't bid....
Will.
Susie, good luck. Is it your only one you've put up of sale?
Mike
hi & no i have another one Am just selling my spare just to test the market after all the previous ones. Trying to save up for my summer hols especially as no pay rise and that the NMC is trying to increase its fees by 20%!!!!! >:(
I wish you luck.
Mike
thanks - not sure if it will sell but if not I'll hang onto it and try another day
Does anyone know how long the original LH badge, the much larger one, was issued for and roughly how many would have been issued?
Mike
Do we think the recent batches of LH badges have dried up, not seen one for sale for a while?
Hi all
I won the recent London Hospital Charge Nurse badge & I have the Staff Nurse version. Does anyone know if there is a Sister, Enrolled Nurse & Auxiliary Nurse/Nursing Assistant variants or any other varients such as Physiotherapist etc? Does anyone know when & for how long they were issued?
Regards
Mike
hi, please can you link a photo?, thanks, I might be ble tp help then; my badges were persona;ised, and also purple. from the 1980's.
Do you have confirmation or provenance that the LH is Definitely from the London hospital?
I was reliably informed from the person who sold me the Staff Nurse version that it was from the London Hospital. The enamel colours seem to fit. The badges look Art Deco in my opinion too.
Perhaps you could contact the archivist at the London to see what they know?
http://www.medicalmuseums.org/Royal-London-Hospital-Museum-and-Archives/
I've emailed the LH Archivist re the badges, watch this space
Included is the Charge Nurse badge I recently acquired.
HI, I have never seen green asscoiated with the London- red and white, purple because of uniforms etc... will be interested to see what jonathan says.
Ps what provenance did the delaer have /give for these being the London?.... it could be Lewisham?...
Ps, if you want to email me the picture I will post it on a site where some body may know... sarah
The Charge Nurse badge isn't from the London, I've been reliably informed from the archivist. Does anyone have any other ideas as to where it came from, as I said I also have a Staff Nurse one too. The green background is display purpose only & not a uniform.
Regards
Mike
Without more clues I think it may be practically impossible to identify which L...Hospital this is from? Do you have a makers mark to at least id an approximate date range, even then the number of possible variation of L Hospitals which it might be checked in the Hospitals Year Book are many. I might assume it to be one of the larger hospitals to justify ordering sufficient badges from a manufacturer to be viable? Unless someone who wore these recognises them the best you might get is an educated guess.Your best hope is that a full set of Id'd badges finding one of these comes up for sale in future. If I can reproduce it I will try Flickr to see if anyone can help?
What this does demonstrate is the difficulty in getting an accurate attribution to such Monogram type badges, good luck!
I'm in Mallorca at the moment so will have a look at makers mark on my return.
Regards
Mike
Named LH minus pin gone on ebay tonight, wonder what price it will fetch after the recent flood!
Re the charge nurse badge above, it was made by Fattorini. I have tried to photograph the badge but is proving difficult due to it being bright silver metal!
Mike - send me the photograph if you want me to try to correct a problem picture.
Use email - webmaster@schoolsofnursing.co.uk
Will.
I think I've managed to send you the picture.
I wonder what this one will command? Check it out on the auction site.
171384457217
check this out - 121387333851 It won't be heading up to Fife
Already clocked it. Nice example don't you think?
I agree its lovely and as much as I would like one in its original box this one is its above my budget level Shame oh well maybe next time
not a badge but a rather nice figurine 291193623263
The same seller also has a UCH figurine listed but not the St Thomas'.
I see Peter bought & sold the most recent large LH badge, well done & I do hope one of our collectors bought it.
The 2 examples recently posted on the galleries, is one of them the one Peter?
Guilty as charged, but it's a case of more recycling than anything as I just wanted to upgrade slightly the one I had.Over the years I have collected badges in a variety of conditions and if I get the opportunity to find a cleaner or less damaged item I will sometimes try and acquire it and sell on my own as in this case(although it was tempting to keep them both),Particularly as there were slight differences re colour etc.
And yes it will be going to a deserving collector.
I'm glad to hear that Peter. Will they be displaying it on here?
Mike
£155 that LH badge went for, the one from 1904-1906. Not a bad price, I wonder what mine will fetch!
A London Hospital badge has come up for auction this evening I see. Popular in terms of bidding, what will this one fetch? Not seen one for sale for a while.
It's up to £51 with 7 days to got, a popular badge me thinks.
Another LH for sale I see.
Hi Mike,
Yes, but I think the prices are dropping? Perhaps a few more people will end up owning one if that doesn't change immediately.
Will.
One in a box for sale
Whoa, £140 it went for!
Another of the stunning larger London Hospital badges has gone on ebay, I wonder what that will fetch?
yes it is a nice badge - my bet would be £250-£300 :-*
I am reminded of an Oscar Wilde quote; What is a cynic?A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
As frequently stated before the final price is merely an expression of the interest of two parties and not necessarily what it is worth. As long as the buyer is happy with their purchase that's all that matters.Good luck to them.
Sue, your guesstimate was close, £243 in the end.
such a pity I'm not so good at guessing 6 numbers on a lottery roll over week
The first London of 2015 has gone on sale in his evening!
I'm guessing the nurse badge collecting fraternity is relatively small compared to some interest areas, so my question is, who is buying these badges at this money, I'm guessing you all know each other. I watch eBay for other items and I have seen a fair few of these specific badges sold and in the great scheme of things they don't appear to be hens teeth. Is it collectors, dealers, speculators?
mick it's probably a combination of all 3. Some badges just tend to command high prices and I am prone to "outbid rage" when its one i desperatly want
I sold 2 of these badges on ebay less than 2 years ago but each made less than £25. Why are they going for these high prices now or why were they not getting these prices when I was selling them?
£76 it finally went for, were the 2 you sold issued, named etc?
Confession time - I bought this one! Have watched these going at £150 + over the years and wanted one to go with the LH Enrolled nurse badge. No more buying for a while now I'm afraid.
Congratulations, look forward to your picture going in the gallery.
Does anyone know the origin of the oval shaped badge, white background, red Maltese type cross with the wording London Hospital surrounding the cross?
Thanks
Mike
I suspect it may be a fund raising badge however the best advice is to contact the London Hospital Archive(well worth a visit)to see if they can help?
Is there an email contact for the LH Archivist?
Try Rlharchives@bartshealth.nhs.uk
Hey Sue
Good luck with the sale of your LH.
hi and thanks Myk - the badges I'm currently selling aren't mine I am selling on behalf of a friend who is finding to move house
Ok, I see its doing well already!
£92 for the latest London with just over an hour to go!
Check out the latest at £150, gone on for sale today.
Yes I lost out on this one at a Newmarket auction but they have bumped up their purchase price a fair bit! Shame as I was after it for a client linked to the Hospital.Never mind, next time maybe.
Checkout the LH that's gone on today on the auction site £51 at the moment!
It's at £98 with less than 10 mins to go. Final guess anyone?
Good quality and period named badges from the London will always find a customer and this one reached £113 which I thought was fair.It is very difficult however to explain the difference in a badges worth to a non nurse as they see one nurse badge fetch this so therefore why isn't their badge worth the same.
I was approached by someone with a number of a scarce badge that he wanted to sell.Originally I told him that normally I would expect one such badge to go for £.. however as he had a large quantity he couldn't understand why that price went down considerably. From being a rare badge his find would have made this a very common item and consequently worth very little. He hasn't got back to me but I may reveal more if these appear on Ebay any time soon!
Ooo, I love a mystery, do let us know if he gets back to you! It was a similar thing with all the LH badges that were about last year, the seller was asking a ridiculous price for the batch.
Hi.
Perhaps the answer lies in 'Game Theory' ?
Will.
Peter, do you have anymore of the London Hospital badges?
Nice London already at £53 with 12 bids already on a certain auction site, will it make that price Peter is selling his for, guesstimates please!
Another nice 1902 1904 badge just gone on sale £10 with 2 bids. Could this be a run of LH's coming onto the market?
I can't believe that Pets is still there I think his at a good price and it would be heading to Fife if I didn't already have it
£57 & £155 the last 2 LH's went for, amazing the differences in price, I wonder if the is anything significant about the nurse the £155 one went for?
Don't think Logic came into it.The luck of the draw on the day as is often the case.I still have a couple of clients after these but with fairly specific requests,I'd say the £100 range is average, less than £80 a bargain, more than £120 dear. The market will always decide.
Are your clients after pre issued or unissued?
Did anyone buy any in bulk from that seller last year?
A damaged LH gone on sale earlier today, £15, no bids as yet, will there be a frenzy?
3 bids on it now! I see Peter has one for sale too.
The LH with damaged enamel is up to £51 now? I wonder how much it will go for with 4 days to go?
£56 with 4 hrs to go, will it get any higher?
rather nice tommies on as well
Clocked the Nightingale, looks to be in good condition. £56 for the LH, are they dropping out of favour do we think?
hi I got the London on behalf of a friend and yes was surprised it went so low ( as is my friend!) but there is a wee bit of enamel damage Its interesting to see what the tommies will fetch
tommies sitting at £255 reckon it will go for over £300
well done sue on the london hospital badge
Wouldn't surprise me if it's more like £400.
The Nightingale is at £390 now!
And .....?
Now........at £410, will it make £500?
Hello.
It would be nice to have more serious comment on these badges, rather than just the 'Odds'..... Perhaps the finding news page will help....
No reply is sought.
Many Thanks.
Will.
Point taken.
Just to say the Tommies didn't reach my guesstimate.
I must admit I do like a wee guess on what a badge will fetch and was pleasantly surprised at winning the SEN tommies badge. It went far below my guess as did recently winning the EN for Edinburgh Royal.
Quick question - does anyone know when they stopped training SENs at st Thomas's I thought it was around 2000 with the advent of project 2000 but someone else thought it was 1984/5?
HI Sue- I think itstopped by the late 80's, will lok in a book- i think that they ony trained ENs for ? 20 years..
the Tommies SEN badge is lovely so all I need know is the red box for the SRN version and the tea towel ( seriously there is one) Does the tomies SEN version have its own box or is the same as the SEN one? Apart from tommies and the London does any other hospitals have there own boxes if issue?(hope that makes sense)
I dont know- I had not thought about that; the sen tommies I have also does not have a box- think they were plastic like mine from the london by the 1980's- the london had paper ones, white in the / 1960-1970's..
Parkside, Macclesfield and Cardiff both had boxes.
It is interesting to note that when St Thomas's Hospital offered training for Enrolled Nurses the badge was inscribed on the back as Name of Recipient and year it was awarded(1969) plus Training School for Pupil Nurses ST. Thomas's Hospital.
The current badge on Ebay is inscribed with the name of the Recipient and the year it was awarded (1987) plus Nightingale School St Thomas's Hospital. As Enrolled Nurses training did not start at St Thomas's Hospital until the 1960's I wonder if the Nightingale School of Nursing was only for RGN at that time and SEN training was undertaken by pupil nurses within the hospital group and the schools of nursing attached to the hospital e.g. Lambeth Hospital, South Western Hospital. It would appear from the wording on the back of the badges that at sometime the Nightingale School of Nursing became responsible for all Nurse Education.
I would appreciate if anyone has any knowledge of this or views on the subject.
hi Barry do you have any photos of these boxes? ( ps MRI scan arranged!)
More badges for sale, one buy it now £99 & one on at £67.
Wow!! The one with Phyllis Friend on back just sold for £377, a good piece of nursing history. I see there was a message to the seller from the London Hospital Nurses League to ask if he would sell it to them as she was President but he didn't respond. Did any of "our gang" manage to get it?
hi its not coming to Fife but see the seller has her GNC badge for sale
Not me Rosemary - I didn't even see it!
Will.
Is it you Pete?
Not me, I wonder if it's the league who bought it & why they didn't go for her Hertford Country Council Nursing Service medal.
Not me ,I do hope that it went to the League.
Nor is it me. Hope the league buy her GNC badge then.
I sadly do not think that it did- someone did try for it, it should neve r have come up for sale like that, not Dame P Friends badge...great shame, so it will not be on show in the Museum for all to see now...
Do we know if the LH Nurses League bought Dame Phyllis Friends hospital badge? I wonder where her DBE Medal is?
I agree with Lizzie and the sentiments of fellow members If anyone on this site has it I would be prepared to swap it for mine and then donate it to where it rightfully belongs
I've contacted the seller of Dame Phyllis Friend LH badge to see if the badge went to the LH Nurses League!
Reply from the eBay seller re LH badge.
Hi, I don't no who the person is who won the badge, or what they do, all I no, is that they were very very happy that they won it.
Does anyone know how much the LH badge went for that Sally Badges was selling?
hi it had sold by the time I found it so alas am none the wiser
Thought I'd re post Lizzie post on here as its a popular topic:
Hi , Please can you all let me know- or indeed the police if the finding come up for sale on ebay: a Matching London Hospital and GNC badge set. They were stolen last night during a break in and are of great sentimental value:
Last night (16/12/2015) our house was broken into in Lymington and my badges were stolen – my LH badge has 'Adrian Hughes' inscribed on the back, the GNC badge has the finding registration number 76HO844E
Check out the 2 LH badges recently added, one is at £123 with 5 days to go & one has gone on today with a starting price of £75 or a BiN of £200.
It would seem there is a bit of a rush on with the LH badges again, ones gone on tonight at £4.99.
There's a nice LH with its GNC badge to a rather lovely sounding Betty Brown gone on sale tonight.
Does anyone know anything about the nurse Betty Brown, whose LH & GNC badges are for sale, £117 at the moment!
£175 Betty Brown badge went for & now one of the earlier larger badges is up for sale, currently at £350!
It sold for £370! Nice badge though.
A nice LH & GNC just gone on for £220 or best offer, any takers?
Well it didn't sell & it's been re listed ar £200, £20 less! Nice set non the less.
Another gone up for sale, now at over £100.
I thinks it's one of those popular badges I was surprised to that the other set hadn't sold I wonder if its because the dates on the back don't tally On about sets did anyone get the beautiful medal set complete with the boxed Tommies? A rare and beautiful set. I so I'd really love to see a photo on here and I bet the story behind the medals is equally as finding
I afraid it went to a dealer who intends to sell it on once researched(Me).So far I have ascertained that the recipient was in the East African Military Nursing Service(Of which I know little) and served with 150 British General Hospital. She was apparently on the SS Khedive Ismail carrying troops to the Far East in in January 1944 when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean with a loss of 1,269 personnel ,including 77 women. She was one of the few survivors. It does rather put some of our concerns in to context!
oh thats a wee bit sad but thanks for the information I really appreciate it
ps thanks for the photos such a stunning set
Lovely London badge just gone for £122. I had my finger on screen to bid at last minute and my son Face timed me to see how I was having been back in hospital today. Bless him aargh!!
Hope that you are better? Perhaps it went to a Londoner!
Thanks Lizzie. Have to wait for4 - 5 weeks and if improved will have radio frequency ablation.
Think Im doomed with EB as I was waiting to grab a nurses GNC book this afternoon as I got her nursing notes written in my era (60's) and I wanted to put them together. A friend arrived and I missed my chance!!If anybody on S of N got it they can purchase the notes from me or sell the GNC work record to me.
Another nice LH & its corresponding GNC badge have just gone on for £150.
Anyone interested in swapping an unissued LH badge that I have message me.
Another LH gone on tonight & already in the £90's. I tried googling the name on the badge but couldn't find anything out about the nurse it belonged to.
A LH in Canada on sale starting at £17.50 with its corresponding GNC badge. Another nice set.
if anyone is after a boxed London - Sally B has one for sale on her site
As I was the underbidder at the auction where this was sold,I had thought that nobody would pay silly money for this but perhaps I need to redefine my definition of "Silly"?
Wow- what mark up is she asking?
It is a large one- so not so surprising and box looks good.
Its on a par with some of the Nightingales, nice badge though. Does anyone know what it went for at auction?
if you wanted it too late it's sold for £450
Hammer price was £250 plus 20% buyers commission so quite a healthy return on that?
Oh, a very good return indeed. What's the auction house?
Another one just gone on at £170 with a SCM badge , gone in a flash! I wonder if there was a GNG badge too?
It did have a GNC badge & a Bethnal Green badge, nice set indeed to the same nurse.
Ooo how exciting, a LH just gone on sale on bay tonight!
Curently at £100 with 5 days to go! Anyone after a swap?
Final price £170! Not bad.
I have both the EN & RN badges if anyone is interested in swaps.
I see a LH on sale for £350!!
If this vendor listed the LH at that price I wonder what their Nightingale was on at?
I would imagine it was quite pricey, badges are not that cheap on there. I had to correct her on her Moss Side badge, it was listed as an Isolation Hospital in St Anne's, Lytham. Don't think she was impressed as I didnt get a thank you!
No,I can imagine that she wouldn't particularly like being corrected! :)
Is that your picture I've just seen on facebook of a QA nurse in tropical uniform?
Yup,Nice isn't it?
It's stunning, hope you get more info on it.
Do you have a link Peter. I don't have Facebook (last of the Mohicans!)....
Will.

Hi Peter.
Thank-you kind sir! One serious lady....
Will.
Digger Lee has a LH with other items £500 or best offer.
Wrongly described as being the rare First type when it clearly has no perforations to the back so the standard later edition.A tad expensive I would say even with the victory medal but who knows?
Did the London ever issue a prize medal & was it ever part of the LCC Hospitals, & therefore ever a LCC badge?
Not that I'm aware of but perhaps Sarah can advise ? As a Voluntary Hospital it was not one of the LCC hospitals and therefore did not issue any of those badges.
Thanks for that, Sarah, any clues?
THE LONDON HOSPITAL was founded in 1740 as a Voluntary Hospital. It was never controlled by the London County Council and never issued a badge like those issued by LCC controlled hospitals. The London Hospital had the first medical school founded in 1985. The London Hospital received royal assent to it new title - THE ROYAL LONDON HOSPITAL in 1990. Being one of 12 teaching hospitals in London it had its own Board Of Governors who managed the hospital up until 1974. The London Hospital badge was instituted in 1931 as a nurses league badge and from 1943 it was awarded to all nurses who completed their training and passed final state examinations. The Hospital Badge has never altered in style but was reduced in size by Miss Littleboy to save on the cost of making it. Hope this helps.
Thanks again for the info. Did the London ever issue a prize medal?
I thought that this had been asked here before... not that I am aware, examination prizes were awarded in the Eva Luckes's time, from 1880 onwards. There is reference to them in the probationers/sisters & nurses records which I am working on, but not what was received..
Sorry for the delay in replying- my graduation 10 days ago and younger son's yesterday!
Sarah
I see Diggerlee has now split the LH and medals now but still kept the price!
It's still for sale at £500!!
Looks like one of the unissued ones just sold for £175. Anyone want to swap one 😜
The £500 badge has gone and not re listed, that's got to be a first for a London Hospital badge.
I am sure it may reappear at a later date but still believe it is unlikely to sell at that price without considerably more provenance and other medals or badges to the nurse. There are a few such similar listings of other Nursing items which appear including a Newcastle medal which for some reason hasn't yet sold at £600!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-Silver-Royal-Victoria-Infirmary-Newcastle-On-Tyne-HEATH-MEDAL-Cased-F2-/381539630986?hash=item58d588bf8a:g:pj8AAOSw5dNWtdSq
At least when my gold medals don't sell I can always have them melted down to recoup the investment!!!!!!!!!!
God forgive you if you ever did .
He wouldn't Sue.... Stat!
Will.
I'm sure he wouldnt, its a sin.
One gone on sale yesterday, currently at £24.99. Guess the end bid.
£109 final price realised. Anyone want to swap one or the EN version that I have?
Check out the badge that's gone on for sale at £575! 😧
The recipient married A E Clark-Kennedy author of several LH books.
Hence the price maybe?
Another just sold for £174.
Anyone know anything about the Olive Luck badge that has gone on sale? Name sounds familiar!
Another one resisted at £199.99, I wonder how many times it will go on for before it is sold?
Nice larger, first issue, variant now at £405!
Hi Myk.
Nice price. Glad that I have a couple!!
Will.
There is a London Hospital Enrolled Nurse badge going for a tidy sum at the moment with 2 days to go. I suspect it is one of the many that were sold a year or 2 ago.
A tidy £160 that LH SEN went for! Who wants to buy mine lol.
Another nice LH SRN gone on sale at £10.
Already at £98!
It's now at £205 with 3 day to go.
.......Breaking News......Nursing badge sells for an amount of money..for details see all previous threads ad infinitum.
Now what was of interest was the superb Military Medal to a QAIMNS nurse E.James for bravery under fire during the First World War .Sold for a very reasonable £3,300 . Whilst I am sure that we will see a few LH badges in the coming years ,bravery awards to nurses are not common at all .How much would a nursing George medal be worth?
At a conservative estimate around the £20,000 mark.
Difficult to say it's worth. I hope it stayed in the UK & wouldn't it have been great if the Army Medical Services Museum or the National Army Museum had been the successful winners.
The finding is from QA website including a picture of Laura Elizabeth James:

Will.
I've acknowledged the source, hope that's suffice! 😬
Seen the latest on at £200.
It didn't sell, its now back on at. £99.
It did sell, this is another.
Well done, my mistake.
if anyone is after tommies 2 more were listed on ebay yesterday . The Kent collection of badges shown in the galleries on here are wonderful What a superb collection
Nice London on sale @ £51, with corresponding GNC, wouldn't mind adding to my set collection.
Hi.
Well, Christmas is coming Myk...
Will.
I didn't win it unfortunately, went for £122.
Another gone on tonight for £24.
Anyone interested in some swaps for a LH Registered Nurse or EN badge?
Not sure if this has been asked but re the earlier larger LH badges, how many were issued & for what period in time?
Thanks
Hi Mike, I think that all that information is in the article about LH badges on here..
Thanks for that Sarah. Is it in the SoM newsletter? If so which one?
Cheers
Anyone want to swap a LH SEN Badge pm me.
Hi Myk.
The article you seek is here:-
http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections17.htm
and an associated article is here:-
http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections16.htm
Best.
Will.
Thanks for that.
I've a London Hospital SEN badge, anyone got some swaps?
Just bought another LH tonight, bargain considering what they are going for. Picture to follow.
I wonder the final on the latest just listed?
£231 it went for, wonder what the providence is?
One of the earlier larger LH badges on sale today, bet it fetches a nice price!
Sally B has just listed a box version on her site
These earlier pattern badges are probably going to reach Nightingale prices I think!
having seen the price sally b's went for I'd have to agree with you Prices seem to be on the up again and its getting harder to find a bargain
I agree that a new bunch of collectors out there seem willing to pay high prices for the better badges. It may settle back down eventually as it often does, for those of us who have seen similar surges over the years. The question is ,is this good or bad for the hobby as a whole? High prices can flush some badges out of drawers onto the market but then every vendor thinks their badge is worth the same as a Nightingale or large London. I certainly think that fewer quality badges are coming onto the market, perhaps because they are already in our personal collections? As one of the remits for this site is to promote the popularity and interest in the history of School of Nursing badges, it seems we are a victim of our own success? Talking with other vendors, many say that they are struggling to find new stock at reasonable prices.
I see Sally's has sold.
Hi
Do you know what price it sold at?
The one on Sally's site was £450 if memory serves me right. However she tends to be a tad on the expensive side & she usually cleans the badges too.
£495 plus postage
Nice tidy sum!
Wow! Must be a record price. Maybe not. Dame Phyllis Friends'badge sold for £500 and that was the small version of this badge. Provenance is everything!
When did that one sell?
It was a little time ago. Dame Phyllis was the Matron 1970"s at the London Hospital and went on to be the Chief Nursing Officer at the Department Of Health. Her Hospital Badge came up on the well know site E*** I remember seeing it and hoped it would be bought by the Hospital Museum. I do not know if this was the case.
Hello johnny4v,
I don't know who purchased that badge either, but it would be nice to know what happened to it. Perhaps Peter can enlighten us....
Will.
If anyone know it will be Peter. I have always been amazed at his knowledge base.
i also remember this badge- wasn't there a discussion on here at the time?? Sarah may also be able to shed some light on this
I have had a trail through the notice board posts and see that Dame Phyllis badge sold for 377 on 9 March 1915. As previously stated this badge is of great importance. I do not know who bought it or if it went to the London Hospital Museum. It would be nice to know where it ended up. I do hope it went to someone or body connected to The London Hospital.
Long shot you know who the seller of Dame Phyllis's badge was?
Sorry I do not know who the seller was or the buyer. It must have been someone with connections to The London. I hope so as it was such an important badge.
Sally has one for sale, quite expensive & one for £200 on auction site presently!
I missed that sale, what a shame it was sold.
We seem to be having a rush on them as there are a few around for sale presently.
There are still 2 on at £200 each at the moment!
Anyone fancy doing some swaps for a LH SEN badge?
Another listed at £190 & another re listed at £250 wit a best offer option! Anyone up for swapping my LH EN badge?
A registered and enrolled nurse LH set just gone on starting at £20, 2 bids and at £102 now! Anyone want to trade my LH registered and or enrolled set for some swaps?
£250 for the latest LH SRN version. The last set, EN & RN versions sold for £195.
did anybody get the London hospital matrons set??? such a great looking set of items
I bid but alas didn't win!
I was impressed with the group including ARRC and large size LH Badge to the Matron and thought it was a fair price. I didn't bid but admit I did have to sit on my hands in the final seconds! I hope it finds it's way back to the London or at least someone who appreciates it's history.
I hope this will be or at least one day be on display in The Royal Hospital Museum. This collection is so important to the history of nursing at the hospital. I note Miss Littleboy was awarded the larger size badge. As the President of Nurses League 1934 to 1935 she was responsible for introducing the smaller size badge. I wonder if she also had a smaller version.
Not me, alas..
Will.
I see a couple are being re listed at a high price!
A nice 1st pattern LH fur sale £495, similar price the to St Thomas' SoN badges!
I'd say a much rarer item and good value. If anything I'd say that Nightingales are still overpriced for the number of them in circulation. That being said there is a rather nice WW2 group in the next Dix, Noonan and Webb auction which includes an MBE,RRC service medals and cased Nightingale; https://www.dnw.co.uk/auctions/catalogue/lot.php?auction_id=494&lot_id=57503&search=1
If only my lottery numbers would come up!
That was a lovely set and a nice piece of Nursing history.
Hi..
Just back from holiday. Does anyone know what happened to the Lot? It must surely have gone for more than the estimates?
Will.
Anyone want to do swaps for a LH RN & or EN variants?
Is see those 2 LH badges haven't sold yet despite being on for a while, a set at £200 and an individual single LH for £250.
The latest LH at £0.99 starting will accept offer if £150!
Hi.
Is that the one with the owner details blacked out mike? It seems to be at 82.01 this morning if so....
Will
Hi Will
It is the one with blanked out details!
Hi Mike,
I wonder why?...
Will.
Maybe it was one of the last ones issued? I'll ask if their is anything significant about the badge, watch this space!
The seller of the lates LH has the right idea, started low ish & now it's at £120 with a bit to boot! People need to take a leaf out of that book if they want theirs to sell!
Hi.
Agreed!! But how many of us, I wonder, would be willing to take the risk of starting low on a very worthwhile item..... What if it did not rise - although I think that anyone registered at SoN (with access to all those badges) should have an idea of real worth..
Now if I could just find a LH SEN fully inscribed...
Will.
Hi Wilf
your wish may have come true! There is currently a London Hospital Enrolled Nurses inscribed badge along with a London hospital and RCN Badge for sale on a auction site. Good Luck if you are bidding. Regards John
£210 already! Anyone want to swap my London EN?
Same one keeps getting re-listed!
Couple on at the moment.
Check out the poor battered LH badge, missing some enamel, I kind of feel sorry for it!
Despite it being battered it's doing well in the sale over £70 now!
Another battered one gone on sale today!
A nice tidy LH with box on sale at £122 after only a day! Might root one of mine out & sell it!
Another unboxed one on at £70.
Hi.
I noticed that some of The London hospital badges have some very clever and sometimes complicated pins - apparently designed to increase patient safety. Very collectable if you want to collect the reverse pins....
Best.
Will
Nice large early version of the LH badge complete with box on sale, currently at £338!
£492 it went for, on a par with the Nightingales albeit a few years ago!
Hi,
Yes. but what are Nightingales bringing now I wonder?
Will.
I was meaning a few years ago as a comparison to be honest. Sally sold one for over £1K recently!
Hi.
A lot of loot Myk....
Will
I know, I had a wishful thought that furlough may have brought badge prices down but alas not!
HI.
I suppose that it is good for sellers, but for collectors looking for reasonable prices - perhaps we will have to look harder. My own collection seems fairly complete, but I am a sucker for belts and belt buckles!! These seem now to appear more frequently and whilst still not cheap they are still attainable items.
But the original design badge and box would be a good investment - unless there is a price crash.....
Will.
I agree, still waiting for the St Thomas' EN to make me complete!
Hi.
I have both versions but, and I hate to admit this (!), I seem to have mislaid an EN version.... Having two homes, here and in the UK, has it's drawbacks. I keep two collections, both locked up and cannot look in the UK safe until I get back.
Leaves one just a little anxious!!! Is it there?!!!
Will
I stored some of my badges at my sisters a while ago. She had a clear out me I'm sure she got rid of some of them unknowingly as I think at times I'm sure I had that one when I see them either on here , FB or eBay! Hope you find yours.
I see a couple more on sale, getting a bit like London busses now!
£419 one has just sold for, that's got to be a record for a London Hospital badge!
Hi Myk,
I thought that the last record was 492 GB Pounds? Perhaps I read that incorrectly?
Will.
You could be right, maybe I should root mine out & sell & hope for the best return!
Hi Myk,
Actually I was wondering just which are the most beautiful badges - The London must rate, though I think that the City of Dublin badge is quiet something else! Maybe we sould start another competition, we've only ever held a few?
Will,
I think that the King Edward VII hospital in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands is one of the best badges!
Yes, you may well be correct Barry, but where can I get one?
Will
Nice first pattern on sale, how much will it go for one wonders!
Like London busses again. Another one come up for sale, first pattern.
Hi
Not quite the same quality though Myk?
Will
True
?920 it went for, a record? :o
Hi Myk,
I think that it could be. It is in the hands of a relative now. It does appear to have unusual markings. I wonders if the 'Nurses Home' is usual for example. Perhaps Peter can enlighten us....
Will.
So it found its way back to a relative of the nurse?
Hi Myk.
"Fraid not. A relative of mine....
Will.
Ah. The second large one sold well too.
HI.
Yes. I wonder on the number actually presented/Made? And are we about to see the Nightingales overtaken?
Will.
I think they may well surpass the Nightingales as they are limited numbers for starters compared to the Nightingales. Do we know how many large first pattern badges were made/issued?
Hi Myk.
I think that we may have that number - I will need to look it out and get back.. Which provokes a further thought - the SEN/EN badges from the London hospitals are probably in much shorter supply the the registered nurse badges - and may command higher prices.
And I do have an ancient copy of 'Letters from Matron to nursing staff - 1928 - 32' which may be revealing. (The London Hospital). May take a little time....
Will
I?d like to know the EN numbers, also when they started to train EN?s, class sizes and intakes a year and was the EN issue badge the same style throughout.
Hi.
Weeeel Now!
Much work with no guarantee of success Myk.... If you can accept that?
Will.
ooo makes me so tempted to sell my boxed one!! ?920 yep really tempting...
But Sue,
What would you do without it? You may never own another....
Will.

Will.
