I am still in shock at seeing price that the "London Hospital badge went for on ebay - £295.50 for anyone that didn't see it. I know that it was a 1940's era but wow!! Congratulations to the lucky person that got it I am very envious!!
Well, yes - a very nice badge - hopefully for someone to treasure. But it did break (I believe) a piece of nursing history, in that the separately accompanying GNC badge went to a another bidder for only £25 pounds or so including postage. There is never a guarantee of course that the second badge (GNC) would have been obtained for a similar sum (maybe £330) for a complete badge 'set' - or even at all, and of course not everyone collects sets (or can afford to).
I think, however, that it is a great shame that sellers separate these badges - sometimes accidentally - sometimes with the profit motive, but in doing so a solid piece of nursing history is lost. Probably for ever. The greater gain might be in selling sets - to the possible benefit of everyone. Perhaps we should start a 'rejoin split badges' campaign. I have personal (and pleasant) recent experience of managing to 'rejoin' two pieces of Halifax history thanks to the seller being awake and taking the trouble to awaken me also. As we have often said on these discussion pages over the years,Value is a very nebulous concept.Ultimately price may be quite different to value.A badge is worth whatever someone is able and prepared to pay on the day.I certainly have paid well over the odds for a badge that I have coveted in the past but to others it may not have appeared to be worth anything other than for any precious metal content.I worry that the rising price of gold might see a rare prize medal go into the "Cash for Gold" smelters!!!!!!!!!!!
I just hope that the purchaser of this particular badge is pleased with their purchase and doesn't really see it as an investment as such ,rather a piece of Nursing history.
Thats a lot of money for a badge but as Pete says " a badge is what you're prepared to pay for it" I try to set a limit when i see one I want but usually "outbid rage" gets me and I have been known to go over my limit Would I spend that much on a badge - probably not. However did get the nice Gulson/Coventry Would have liked the recent Bristol but did resist. Myk I know likes to collects sets and admire him for that and I think they should, in an ideal world, stay togther but again its down to money.
Wilf loved your recent news bulletin and read it avidly. I try and stick to my prefered areas of collecting such as Scottish and Brummie badges but as always resolve disappears and temptation kicks in......
I am the mad bird who bought the London Hospital badge.
I know I paid more than I should but for me it was a must and I have to admit that I'm in shock as well!
I am a London trained girl who did her SEN training there - have that badge, and then went on to do the SRN training and lost that badge, Just felt bereft without my second badge. It was such a talking piece amongst people as I wore the two together with great pride. I have a bit of history about it from the seller, I would like to think that the lady who was awarded it would be happy in the knowledge it will again be loved and worn with pride by a LH nurse, (if not to scared to wear it now!). I am aware that these badges are much sort after and have waited ages for one to come available and just had to have it. (If I can get over my rashness and wonton looseness with my cash, husband thinks I've lost it!).

'Katogirly' has a magical story to tell and I would really like to hear it told - two London Hospital badges - one SEN one Registration, and then to lose one.... I am mesmerized! I am absolutely certain that the original recipient would have approved and I am well content that it is not going to be hidden in a box! (Please do not hide it in your jewellery box - a common target). I am just so pleased for you!

Seriously. You don't need me to tell you what your badge is worth - you obviously know that very well. But I would very much like to hear your story. I do know of Nightngale nurses who have both SEN and Registration, but I have never come across a London Hospital nurse with both.

I am very new to forum's, never been on one before, i am a website designer/ computer programmer, but anyway, when i was 8 years old, now 41, i found a shoe box with various bits in it, i kept it right until now, and i was going through some things in the loft and came across the box again, inside it there were a few things, but the main thing is a hospital badge, i would like to know if i can find info on it, or indeed if it is worth anything or not, the badge is i think solid bronze, brass or copper, maybe you could tell me, i will give you a good descripton.
On the front it has a mule with a man leaning over to help a person laid on the floor, the words surrounding the badge is,
VADE - ET - TU - FAC - SIMILITER
On the rear is,
a pin which goes into a secure twist lock type thing, the name Lucy Ellison and under that it says, certificated nurse with the number 1123 underneath, around the outside it says, MANCHESTER ROYAL INFIRMARY - 1752 -

Basically you can use badges up to 128KB per post/4 per post: Advice - make sure that the picture is within 650px square.
Put it where you want it: Advice - I put them on the Desktop:
Click 'Additional options' below the text panel: Advice - browse to the photograph and select it.
Then simply 'Preview' and or 'Post' via the bottom buttons. **'Post' to fix it!
That should be 'bingo' - like this....
Then Click the photograph to enlarge/reduce sizes.
Ps. I have stolen the photograph from Peter 'backman'! He will know a lot more about about the badge/value than I ever could - no doubt he will add when he arrives. If you want the details to add to the photograph galleries please let me know. You could perhaps place your own, plus the reverse?

The badge in question was awarded to nurses who trained and qualified at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and features the Good Samaritan in the act of relieving the wounded traveller.It is taken from the Corporate Seal of the hospital which was commissioned in 1843.The latin inscription around the edge Vade et tu fac similater means go thou and do likewise.The number to the rear would identify the awardee and date of issue but you might try getting in contact with the hospitals nursing fellowship to follow up this further; http://www.cmft.nhs.uk/your-trust/our-history/nurses-fellowship.aspx
As to value,yes these are collectable but MRI badges were issued for many years and come up relatively frequently so often don't fetch too high prices unless on a good day at auction.Check out other parts of this forum for information on badge values but I'd say anywhere between £20 and £50 as an estimate.Most collectors here value the badge for it's history rather than financial value,Enjoy!

Hi katogirly, just to say that as a londoner also and at a recent reunion ( and on the London hospital facebook page book , please do join and come to a reunion!) there was much talk about your purchase......but if you report the loss to the london ( the league of nurses)you can be given someone elses after 1 year !!(they have lots in the safe, as they are "meant"!!! to go back once we die! ...... I never remmeber seeing an sen with your style badge....

Hello everyone. I am a 'new girl' to this website, but have been looking for something like this for ages; and am only glad that this forum exists!
Anyway, regarding this topic; I was absolutely shocked to see that the 'West Lothian college of Nursing' badge, currently on ebay, was originally on for offers STARTING at £59.00. I see it didn't sell, and is now on 'to buy' at £56. (As an aside, I see it is stated that it from 1959. I am sure this is incorrect, because West Lothian college wasn't in existence until at least the mid 70's).
On a slightly different note, can anyone advise me as to whether there are any other websites where you have a potential opportunity to by nursing badges, other than ebay and the 'Sally Bosley' site? Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you!
hi, that sellers badges often seem a little higher than others..but often go....supply and demand. we have checked nay antiques places and have so far only found 1 badge...perhaps i am finding another keen collector around! As another newbie they do seem rather like hens teeth!Good luck

hi - I have done swaps and this is a nice way to get a badge you want. I recently had a successful and wonderful swaps with Barry - getting badges that I have never seen on ebay or Sallys sites. I have bought off Sally's site and am very tempted by her Hereford but its beyond my price limit.........
As for the Lothian badge I would have bought it at that price if I Hadn't already got it - perhaps we could persuade Wilf do do a swap corner????!!!! Pete was thinking about selling some of items (see his posting "closing down sale") Did offer to swap a nice £50 note for his tommies but alas no reply LOL!!!!
I have always found that badge prices on ebay can go in swings and roundabouts - sometimes they all go for big bucks and there are periods when they go for sensible money. I have noted that if a badge goes for high money it seems to bring a glut of same badge from others trying to cash in.
Its not just nursing badges that this happens to - a recent very guide interest badge ( about size of 10p) went for over £100 and even some golly badges can command big prices.
When I started to collect badges London area badges were always out my price range and that started me specialising in Scottish and Brum badges as these were more sensibly priced - then Liverpool badges went and rocketed and was surprised to see the recent Liverpool SEN badge sell sensibly As for the scottish ones well they're rocketing - check out the Kilmarnock.

Having been an i/p in the Glasgow 'sick kids' hospital; albeit many years ago, I should have recalled that there was a training badge. And what a badge too. Really beautiful.
As far as Scottish badges are concerned, I am especially interested in both the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh 'Pelican' badge; both the 'Nurses League' badge, and also the SEN 'Pelican' badge.
I am also interested in - even seeing!, a photo of the 'Special' Scottish hospital 'Carstairs' hospital badge

hi alas no luck I don't have a carstairs I think that there is an RIE on as a buy it now on ebay. Scottish badge prices are definately rising a few years ago I was able to pick them up for reasonable prices. I was able to get 2 nice ones via Barry finding a recent swapping session. It has taken me a long time to acquire a glasgow sick kids - i also have 2 edinburgh sick kids and an Aberdeen sick kids. Have had no luck in tracking down an edinburgh SEN or nurses league badges
Oh and yes I did get tempted by a badge on Sally's site today and not the coveted Hereford!!!!!!!!

Yes you are right, there is an RIE 'Pelican' badge on ebay currently; however it is the older 'School of Nursing' as opposed to the 'Nurses League' one. Both are stunning in my opinion.. There is also an SEN version of the 'Pelican' badge. It's a different shape, but equally as lovely. ( can provide a web address for a photo, if anyone is interested)

I agree. The Leith badge is a very lovely one. Suspect not that many of them around, as it was never a big hospital - from what I remember anyway!

hi have to confess I hadn't seen the SEN version before - i do remember the nurse league one but haven't seen a pic in a long while so it was nice to see again. Barry has an extensive collection and am wondering if he has a Carstairs So thats another edinburgh badge on my hit list but i guess if the ERI SEN did come up for sale it would be beyond my budget Now if i could only get 6 numbers on the euro lottery!!!!

I might be suffering from a bit of stupidity but I don't know what the 'Carstairs' badge looks like?
Also with regards an S.E.N. (M) Netley badge, I hope that you've not confused this with the SEN (M) Army School of Phyciatric Nursing badge (green rim - with the chapel of Netley in the centre - in chrome/enamel), if its a Netley version it should be H.M. (I don't have one).

I sincerely doubt any stupidity on your part! 'Carstairs' more often than not refers to the special hospital at that location. A misnomer perhaps, but to those 'in the know' there was only one 'Carstairs'. Along with Broadmoor; Moss Side; Park Lane; and Rampton....

The 'Publication' of the pictures of the London SEN Badge was very welcome, [Thanks Wilf, I had NEVER seen an SEN Badge from the London.] Apart from it's association with Sir Frederic Treves and John Merrick - The 'Elephant Man' the London appears in the Start-up credits of the early 'Heartbeat' T.V. series and in the John Thaw Film 'Goodnight Mister Tom'.
The United Manchester Hospitals Large Copper[Bronze?] Badge Illustrated above has a 'Vesica Pecis' [Zulu Shield] Shaped 'Variant' Badge issued to 'Physiotherapists' trained there, This Also shows the 'Good Samaritan' on the badge.
I trawled through the gallery of English nursing badges - the whole 136 pages of it and still could not find one of my nursing badges I received from Prestwich School of Nursing, part of Salford RMN 1982.

As for the one on ebay that bokojnr is selling I was tempted but think that its missing its top name bar - however i have seen 1 or 2 top bars for sale on ebay before. It was a little more than I normally pay but just had to have it!!! ::)

I agree, they ARE fantastic, and having such a fondness for the Western General Hospital, where I started my RGN, (but completed at the RIE - long story!)
I well remember the nurses wearing them; and funnily enough even a particular staff nurse - even after all these years! ( early 80's)
