Some days it is more interesting than others!

So you bid/won those badges? Will you be selling them in your shop?
That's the aim if I ever intend to afford food again!
Congratulations! I,too, had a good little package from the Postman courtesy of a vey interesting website called Peter's Collectables!!!!! Lovely old 1932 "A nursing guide " from Guy's Hospital Nurses' league, Nursing Illustrated magazine 1938, Nursing Mirror1957,Nursing Times 1982, QARANC recruitment poster and print out of article on Nursing Badges. I just love reading these old books/magazines and their adverts. Thank you Peter, much appreciated.
Yes, very well done Peter!
In my post, a few days ago now, came another superb badge - and yes, it was from Peters Collectables. Unfortunately I can't reveal what was in the packet as it was for inclusion in the finding website news. But that is already being put together and very soon I will reveal all - so to speak!
Will.
Ps. Also in my post were my father's day greetings and a couple of superb photographs of the Cumbrian coastline from Adrian B (for those not in the know - Adrian is the totally silent second SoN administrator and software engineer who has been responsible for the technical creation and operation of the website since it was first envisaged... It was also his birthday yesterday!). I know that he won't mind my wishing him a happy birthday and hoping that his card was in his post... Happy Birthday Adrian!
Queen Marys maternity hosp courtesy of petes wee shop xx thank you
Today, well impressed with a lovely copy of Honor Morten's How to Become a Nurse,4th edition, circa 1898.It even has a chapter entitled Nursing Uniforms,Medals, etc.
Also 4 6x4 black and white photos of ward scenes
Glad Will, Sue and I have recently funded you to continue with this obsession of yours Peter - you really will have to see someone soon to try and sort it out!!!!!!
I think I'm probably beyond salvation as I have been a collector all my life!At least Nursing memorabilia takes up less space than Militaria,bayonets,helmets,etc,etc......
That's not fair apart from my medical collection I only have about 200,000 other items in my collection, I know anyone doing the maths will have worked out that I have around 100,000 items in my worldwide medical collection.
No space for any more items then Barry?
I've already reduced my collection somewhat and yess I'm still in the market for more hopefully at sensible prices!!!
Today I received the book I originally ordered which was How to become a Nurse 10th Edition from 1923(originally edited by Sir Henry Burdett from 1899 to 1915).Another great listing of Hospitals which accepted Nurses for Training, their staff and bed numbers and terms of training.A mine of useful information along side Honor Morten's similar earlier book which was sent to me in error and is equally finding.I will put a couple of snippets from these,on these pages later if anyone is interested?
Also a rather nice St Stephens Hospital badge.
As far as I'm aware there are 12 Editions of this book the last being for 1928.
The "Infirmos Curate" badge you have (where is it from) because I have that in the centre of a rectangular badge with Operating Department/badge/Assistant.
Hi Barry ,that particular badge is for St Peter's Hospital Henrietta St London. This was a hospital treating Urological disorders and would certainly have had a range of Operating Theatres so possibly was a ODA training facility? The latin Infirmos Curate was basically a motto meaning Heal the Sick so could have applied to any hospital I'm afraid so not a definitive ID.
Do you happen to know what district/area/postcode Henrietta Street is in?
It's close to Covent Garden so a couple of streets north of the Strand,WC2E. Handy for the Monday antiques market and afternoon tea at the Savoy.
This mornings post had a parcel of Nursing and Health related badges including a couple of unknowns, two postcards ,a very kind instruction guide for how to assemble a QARANC veil,a copy of Private Eye magazine,A Russian film war film on Stalingrad, and a nice silver GNC badge.
You can try me regarding the unknowns and I hope the veil (origarmi) is of use.
Thanks Barry, I have added some to the albums and others are available here;https://www.flickr.com/photos/backmanmal/
a very nice Littlemore Hospital - photo follow
At long last - a Nightingale badge courtesy of Peters Collectables. No more badge buying this month!!
A wonderful Gold Coast nursing badge and two smashing U.S. hospital badges
I have finally managed to get an example of an Edwardian Nurses set/chatelaine.I have several cabinet card pictures of Victorian and Edwardian nurses wearing such sets suspended from their belts and I believe that they would have been considered essential tools of the trade at the time. This one is leather and retains 3 of it's original tool containers in brass.
Two cabinet cards, including one showing 8 Leicester Nursing Sisters in remarkably relaxed poses!!! One nice postcard of a ward at St Bartholomew's Hospital circa 1908
Delivered to my temporary address in Wales were a variety of goodies today .A commemorative Brass plaque of Edith Cavell,3 assorted ebay badge purchases, what I believe is a student nurse star badge from Mater Misercordia Hospital Dublin, a hefty volume of A reference list of Surgical Instruments and appliances for Allen & Hanbury ltd 1930.
I have just completed a 3 day tour of the antiques centres of the cotswolds.7Antiques Centre1 Antiques fair, several smaller Antiques shops.Sum total of Nursing items one silver badge for Sheffield Royal Infirmary and four postcards of nursing groups.Still managed to buy some Art Deco pieces and just avoid appearing in shot on the Antiques Road Trip! So far no magical El dorado of undiscovered nursing badges but there is still this weekend?
What colour is centre of the Mater Dublin student badge (as I have 4 different colours, but wondering if this another colours)?
Silver chrome six pointed star with a navy blue enamel and MMH in the middle. No makers marks.I'm pretty sure it's the same as the one in your album Eric.
Stunning LGH/Leicester General which I have been after for ages and a gartloch
The Leicester is a nice on,as is the Gartloch.Does anyone know if the ordinal LGH badges would have been as highly polished when issued and worn? This one does actually look good for it? I used to work with one nurse many years ago who polished all of her badges and her GNC EN badge was practically golden.
I have the Leicester badge, the shiny one, so me thinks it's in it's original patina. As with the LH Charge Nurse badge, it's difficult to photograph hence not on the SoN gallery.
I also think it is its original shiny metal Looking at places where you can't clean its the same I worked with a nurse who had this badge and remember it being equally as shiny Reminds me of the QE SEN badge -also as bright and difficult to photo. Took me about 20 attempts to get this photo!
Not sure if any of you saw the Scottish midwife badge with certificates but I won it/them and a parcel arrived today with badge and a plethora of nurse related certificates as well as ration books all belonging to same person - a truely amazing record of a Scottish Midwife including a school leaving cert for Dunfermline- a 15min drive away from me I am amazed at what I won It will take me a while to plow through it all and photograph so please be patient as I will upload to this site
Am now in a quandary - do I keep it all or do I resell the ration books as they're not my thing???
Does anyone know how I can research this nurse/midwife???
and life gets spookier - as I opened the carefully wrapped badge I found it was packed in an envelope with a certain Peter M's of Norfolk address on it!!!
rest assured it's now shredded along with my other papers
Hi Sue. Greetings.
My own view is that you should keep everything possible relating to the history of a nurse - and you seem to have a treasure trove....
I am on holiday right now so am unable to contribute to the question of research - 'lizzie' may well be able to assist, although Peter is no slouch by anyones standards.
Will be in Athens again on Aug 4th for a few days en-route back from the UK - August in Athens!!
Very Best.
Will.
Hi.
What was in my postbag today? New article.....
http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections45.htm
Will.
wonderful as always Thanks
Why do I never get postbags like Wilf's, but I do get some nice items nevertheless, the latest being 32 medical related items (badges & patches) both military and civil to todays Russia.
Hi Barry.
Why do you never get postbags like mine? Perhaps you don't have two addresses! Or perhaps you open them too quickly!!
But lucky you - I was in Moscow many years ago and had a superb opportunity to obtain many badges - all I needed to do was to trade British (or American) cigarettes. But, and this is life you will agree - I did not collect badges at the time - but I did smoke. My UK brands were unobtainable to the general public too, so I was never inclined to trade my precious supply.... A superbly missed opportunity. But then I was able to attend the Bolshoi ballet (Don Quixote for one performance - magnificent) in the Winter Palace within the walls of the Kremlin.
But those badges - everybody who was anybody (and all the others) seemed to possess several. And I was only interested years later!!
Will.
