Title: London Hospital Badge
Post by: myk1066 on August 17, 2013, 11:23:13 PM
Having obtained a spare London Hospital badge is there anyone interested in doing a swap for some hospital/nursing badges?  Serious offers only, not after cash.  It's the one on the left of the photo.

HI Mike, I do have a Nightingale SEn, but its not for swaps! Regards the other info, it is being loaded by Will in an article i have written about the LH badge and how it evolves... i think that your questions will be answered in there! (not neccessarily for set numbers, and Peggy is sadly  now dead who ran the course for many years.

Hi Lizzie
The HM on the EN badge is as follows
JRG, Anchor, Lion and what appears to be a letter L, do you know what year this is then?
Mike
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: nursesue on August 20, 2013, 06:01:49 PM
do you know I think I prefer the EN version. Any chance of a photo of the hallmarks especially the date letter? To work out the date as it depends on the font and the "shield" in which the letter is sitting. The rest is easy Anchor = Birmingham assay office and the lion is silver As for JRG that cold be John Gaunt but the London Hospital set is wonderful

Hi Sue
Ill load one later of the hallmarks, I know the letter L has a fancy loop at the top of it.

after supper im will look up in my  little silver mark book, sounds nearer the mark on my letter... how much does it weigh?
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge

Not sure about the weight, is that important?
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: Sarah Rogers on August 20, 2013, 07:25:28 PM
only because it be lighter if a more recen badge..just interesting thats all...also please can you weigh the SRn version, and I can weigh mine(1984) as I have a finding that they got a bit lighter-manufacturers changed.
Fancy L is the year after mine ...1985.

Very simply the L and Birmingham hallmarks narrow this one down to either 1960 or 1985 depending upon the font and shape of base.I would suspect the later perhaps?
Lots of good little books such as Millers or Jacksons which detail the different marks, all invaluable for dating many badges otherwise unmarked.Very nice acquisition!

Thanks for that Backman.  Ill upload a pic of the hallmarks but it won't be today as I'm on a long day!  I weighed them last night & each badge weighed 15g, does that seem right?  Not sure if the scales were correct

Hi, as SEN training didnt start unitl later in the 60's ..and curly L is the same style as my own badges hm i feel it is probably /likely to be the 1985 one.

Just checked on EBay, the London SRN says it is hall marked for 1995 and has reached £41 and the SEN is hall marked for 1985 and has reached £51. Neither has names engraved on back.

re Pupil Nurse training at the London;

The last Pupil Nurse qualified in 1990, from the Princess Alexandra College of Nursing and Midwifery. (just one Pupil that year-they had started in 1989)-there were many more the year before.( source, archivists at The Royal London hospital Archives). I assume that they received the "Old " LH style badge-SEN  as on ebay at present.
So the information in my article is correct!

Probably too much if the vendor does indeed have further badges? We have seen(and been victim to)multiple badges coming onto the market several times over the years. It goes to show that a badge is only worth what an individual is prepared to pay. Scarcity is only one factor in the price a badge will fetch.I think the highest cost (ordinary) badge that I've seen was a boxed Nightingale which reached £1500.I think I'd prefer some of the unrecognised gems which still crop up from time to time.Anyway It's only money!!!!

Post by: myk1066 on September 07, 2013, 02:44:08 PM
I agree & I've also paid top whack for badges only to see them come along like London busses!  One that springs to mind was the Broadgreen that kept appearing a few years ago, whilst not in the same league as the prices of the LH & Nightingale they were pretty frequent at the time.  Anyone want to swap me some badges for my EN LH?  God loves a tryer.

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: wilfb on September 08, 2013, 08:41:22 PM
Hi Myke,

Seems a definite possibility (finding the market that is) since the badges are un-named. Maybe someone has a job-lot of un-issued badges somewhere.  For me they are of little value (I certainly would not pay anything like the current prices for an un-named badge) as it is really simply a badge - no history.... I seem to remember a couple of un-named Nightingales went for quite reasonable sums in the not too distant past.

I know that some badges are un-named league of nurses/RCN etc etc, and are perfectly collectable as such. I also admire the sheer craftsmanship of many badges, and might certainly be tempted if I had a gap in my collection (as I am sure that we all do), but as a general rule I try to avoid all badges which appear to have no history, rightly or wrongly. You pays your money, you take your choice!

I have a brother-in-law who collects military badges, many of which were not named, and he spends I know, a lot of time trying to ensure that badges he buys are not reproduction. But he also has a fair collection that he can be fairly sure are...  There are many factors to consider when buying non-named nursing badges though, and the space here isn't sufficient to deal with the topic. Perhaps it could make a topic in our 'collectors' column on the news page. Perhaps.....

Un-named badges? For myself - only where they should be so. Otherwise - no history, no badge! But I do acknowledge that others may not feel the same way, I just enjoy seeking the history, and reveling in the finding that a badge I am holding has some...
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge

I too am surprised it fetched that much.I agree with Will that these are probably unissued items. It will be interesting to see what the next ones fetch, I wouldn't mind one but won't pay this much on principle.

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: myk1066 on September 09, 2013, 12:03:39 AM
I've seen the North Staffs too, very expensive.  The London EN is very nice though & a rare one, only the 2nd I've seen in my few years of collecting.  Reading Lizzies article makes them limited compared to some other hospitals, who trained Pupil Nurses for quite a few years before the London.
Mike
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: backman on September 09, 2013, 06:14:57 AM
And the Staffs badge is with enamel loss to the bar! The problem is that when vendors see Nursing badges go for high prices for the rare items, that they use those prices as a benchmark for their own less rare lots.At least, whilst Sally Bosely's prices can be high, they are based upon rarity and condition.Unfortunately it is down the collector as to what we continue to pay that drives the market, and yes heart will often overrule head when it comes to it!!!! As long as the buyer is happy with their purchase the end price is only usually an issue for the underbidder.
On the basis of these prices is anyone interested in 850 assorted badges, cost somewhere between £20,000 and £150,000?

A lifetimes work,Barry? How many years have you been collecting? I know that when I picked up my first badges in the 1980s they were relatively easy(and cheap)to acquire.Unfortunately family commitments at the time meant that I could only dabble.Once I could afford to start collecting seriously the prices had rocketed and the supply had dried up.I believe you you and Edelweiss and perhaps a couple of others are surely the largest holders of Nursing badges in the UK,much more so than the RCNs holdings.
I have to say on most peoples behalf we would love to see more of them on here if you get the chance.Feel inspired to produce a book?

I started collecting in 1979, and was offered and purchased 80 Hospital/Nurses badges for £40 in 1980, I principaly have a military medical, dental & veterinary, insignia collection worldwide plus all allied medical trades i.e. Physio, X-ray, Theatre, Imunity, Ambulance, Para-Medics, Etc.
One area I'm particulary intrested in being buttons and Doctors insignia ie. B.M.A. Etc.

I've just been sorting through some of my badges, not sure how many I have but I bet it's around 1000 mark including all the GNC badges & repeats as a result of collecting sets, there are probably more in all honesty!  What's nice about looking through them is the surprise when you see one you didn't realise or forgot you had.

He won't remember but I can remember speaking to Barry in the early 80's, in either Hong Kong or Belfast about his collection which was quite extensive then. My Interest then was numbered infantry buttons and others pre 1881, that conversation stimulated me to look out for medical stuff. The majority of my collections went some years ago for a tidy sum but when I see some prices being raised I wish I had kept them.

Hello, I was in Belfast from 1982 - 1985 and Hong Kong 1986 - 1988, for some reason although I've sold some of my collection at a profit it still seems to have got larger.

Hi Barry.

Sounds a little Irish to me Barry!! I wonder - if I build a new shed can I take care of your collection too please? I have a new method of keeping them secure - I cast them into a 1 ton concrete block, let it set, and then leave the door open so I can hear anyone using a cold chisel and club hammer...

But seriously, my own (meager) collection continues to grow too - even though I only seek particular badges - but like Peter, and no doubt others, collecting nursing badges has become an expensive hobby. But I would give my eye teeth for a genuine LH SEN with inscribed detail.... No harm in wishing I suppose....

Will.

my own collection is tiny compared to some others I am concentrating on Scottish and brummie badges but did get a nice Leicester recently ( photo to appear soon!!).  My hospital badge is unnamed and undated and I'll never part with it As for SEN/ SEAN badges I seem to have a wee collection  slowly building and am watching for matching SRN badges! Oh and just as you think you've got the matching set for a particular hospital another one creeps out of the woodwork  ;D

Mike
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: backman on September 13, 2013, 11:59:10 AM
I suppose there are comparisons to be made between the collecting of Nursing badges and that of Military badges(a much larger hobby).Original attributable and named awards are generally far more collectable than unnamed items. The scarcity of some military items has led to them being reproduced and restrikes  and copies abound(this effectively stopped me collecting Polish Military items several years ago)
I wouldn't say the newer badges are worthless because undoubtedly some collectors will buy them, however they should probably be worth less than a named issued item.I would (and probably will )bid but my maximum price will probably reflect that difference. The market is however extremely fickle and I think they may fetch more than we expect,it being a case of supply and demand. If I really had money going spare I would be investing in some of the MilitaryNursing sets coming up for auction at Bonham's in October which I believe will go for far more than their estimates appealing to the military collector

It may be some considerable time before named ones come on the market- and even when named it is not easy to research the person as it will be too recent for work records . Not many of these were issued? 20/year for only 20 years.... ( pupil sets were very much smaller than the set i started in and ? only twice /year)..so it is perhaps an only chance to have one of these in a collection... it is a stunning badge, with or with out a name. I think the more recent LH srn version is not as thick quality/ looks different from mine which is 10 years older, but the SEn ones are by a different company (pinches)and have the original brighter red enamel- which i personally prefer.--
Those Bonhams sets are wonderful-as are the prices... so high, what a collection he had!

Hi.

In reply to myke's question about the value of the current LH badges on ebay.

I would not regard any genuine nursing badge as worthless - someone has often spent considerable time and effort on the initial project; designs and manufacture are often superb and the final product intricately crafted. Even the more modern versions are usually well worth collecting. The question for me personally is quite simply does a badge meet my own collecting criteria? For me:-

1. It must be demonstrably genuine. I would only buy an un-named badge or otherwise un-inscribed badge if I had a very special reason for doing so.
2. I would always seek a badge with some history special (of the nurse or organization) attached.
3. The badge condition is secondary. Any badge can be graded - rather like coins and medals - but although perfection is a plus I prefer a badge with a history attached - even if I have to find it.

I see nothing at all wrong with collecting un-named badges - there is always the history of a badge itself - it's design and manufacture, and I have seen some excellent reproduction nursing badges which could fill a whole in a collection. Temporarily or otherwise. I really don't know if I would buy a reproduction - I do possess just one but really for the sake of possessing one. An excellent badge let down only by the modern pin finding.

But I agree with Peter 'Original attributable and named awards are generally far more collectable than unnamed items'. It depends quite simply on why one is collecting nursing badges, and in the final analysis on what a badge is worth to the individual collector.  Personally, the LH SEN currently on ebay is not for me, but it may certainly be prized by another - perhaps a nurse who has lost her own.....

Will.

Interesting comments, I am not a nursing badge collector, I'm a magpie and dip in and out of whatever interests me, my main collections were military buttons and medals. I would imagine that for a majority here, as in medal collecting, there is an interest in attributable items. I used to think that un-named items make good gap fillers but there is always that niggle that you want the item that has been touched or worn by the individual and your collection isn't really complete until you find it, the collection stares back at you accusingly. Or maybe that was just me.

With regards my military medical items I do have some spares however I don't have a great deal of Naval hospital insignia and I know that I don't have a Netley Hsspital S.E.M.N. badge (if they exist), a R.A.F. nurses belt-buckle and the current Defence Dental Service Hygienist badge.

I just wondered wether the league could lay claim to unissued badges.  Was the London similar to St Thomas' in that hospital badges should be returned from original owner on retirement/death of the recipient  of a LH badge?

Hi Mike, sorry , studying now so finding things in, but did weigh them last night:
my badge: 1984; 14g
a early small LH, (probably of the first 1931 ish lot; 18g  !-- it does have a more substantial pin than the others, but no safety pin like both mine and the other early one0
another early small LH (she moved away from the London in mid 1930's so assume she had bought it before then, but it is slightly more polished than mine and the other............ 14g

hope that helps, ..but our scales do vary.. and are electronic

Ps 1st two are both Pinches, mine is fattorinis....

now how about this for a conundrum.....

The SEN LH badges around at the moment are all H/m  for Pinches....but I think that they sold up in the late 1960's...hence fattorinis taking over and the red colour change, as on mine.
So the question is , if pinches went bust/sold up were the badges not H/m and passed onto fattorinis??, and then hallmarked etc at the later date ???

Hope that makes sense...... ???

I think that the LH EN badge are a good badge to have, considering the rarity, limited run and for how long the LH trained Pupil Nurses, inscribed or not & bearing in mind the SoN would have just ordered a batch not finding the demise of EN"s perhaps, at the time of ordering.

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: nursesue on October 14, 2013, 02:34:40 PM
it's not to so much as the quantity being sold but the decision you make about the badge. Its a badge you really want from an area that you like and you perhaps spend a little more than anticipated only to find a whole drawerful form the same seller. The Coventry is a example of this the seller has 3 different  badges ending at the same I made the choice of the Coventry and just missed out on his EBH - after that 25 coventry badges appeared for a fraction of what I paid and i didn't get the only EBH he had  Since then the EBH has been on ebay (from a different seller) and went for more than I could afford. I still love the Coventry and did as Myk suggested got some more and did some swapping but am a little peeved at missing out on the EBH As for my London SEN - its a wee Leanardo gem ::)

Hi, I doubt that would work- see my article about the badges, it mentions the changes to the schools of nursing and mergers with Barts.there have been so many changes over the past twenty years. The SON moved from one site to another about 1 year ago, when we saw badges at City there were not spares like that- may be some were sold off before that.
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: backman on October 19, 2013, 01:39:01 PM
I agree Liz,if my own experiences of requesting information are anything to go by,a FOI will probably just demonstrate that in most University Nursing departments the information just wasn't recorded. The rush from Schools of Nursing to University Faculties of Health means that much of the history that preceded them was just abandoned along with badges, records and photos.A few individuals may have salvaged some of these but as older Tutors retired, much of the information was just not retained.I was lucky that some 20 years ago I managed to keep a couple of the older Southampton badges from one of the tutors there but this is becoming less and less likely with the passage of time. There are occassionally finds such as the London Cache of items but once gone thats it!

It reminds me of when I served on some of the RCN bodies, the chair of the Occupational Health Forum had her chain of office with her after a conference, which rather resembled a mayoral chain and was pretty weighty.I dare such regalia are now consigned to the vaults but each one was a work of art in itself

To be honest, other than the fact it gives some collectors an opportunity to acquire a badge that might normally be too costly for them,I'll be glad to see an end to these. If I were the vendor I might decide to hold any residual stock until the market settles and new collectors come on line.
I would much rather see other badges come out of the back of granny's drawers. There are still a lot of LCC badges hidden out there and looking at the number of prize badges awarded via articles in Nursing journals of the day,a fair number of gold ones.I had another dealer tell me that he had sent a Gold Bristol Royal Infirmary medal for met down recently as he didn't think anyone collected them!!!
Perhaps a mission this year is to raise the profile of the nursing badge and it's place in our history so that old forgotten badges can be released into the wild or at least identified and catalogued to be appreciated by the families of those nurses that earnt them?

I aksed about box: Box front - black with a gold band around the edge (no writing), the big one I have i am pretty sure has the LH name on the box, and I think the badge fits better....

I've just looked at my 2 different sized LH a SoN badges, the much larger badge does have a bigger box, which is square in shape, it's black with a gold coloured wavey border with the LH crest & the lettering The London Hospital School of Nursing in gold.  The inside of the box is lined with black velvet & the badge lies on top with a fine groove for the pin to fit into, it isn't a recessed circle like the one on ebay.  The inside of lid of the box is lined in cream silk & has gold lettering John Pinches London encircled with a diamond shape.

The smaller LH badge is also in a black box but has rounded corners, the inner lining is exactly the same as the above.  The external lid of the box again is the same as the above minus the gold coloured wavey border.

The recent batch of LH badges come in the usual cheap plastic boxes, dark bade, foam inner & clear lid.

I suspect the badge box on ebay isn't original.

Do you have confirmation or provenance that the LH is Definitely from the London hospital?

I was reliably informed from the person who sold me the Staff Nurse version that it was from the London Hospital.  The enamel colours seem to fit.  The badges look Art Deco in my opinion too.

The Charge Nurse badge isn't from the London, I've been reliably informed from the archivist.  Does anyone have any other ideas as to where it came from, as I said I also have a Staff Nurse one too.  The green background is display purpose only & not a uniform.

Without more clues I think it may be practically impossible to identify which L...Hospital this is from? Do you have a makers mark to at least id an approximate date range, even then the number of possible variation of L Hospitals which it might be checked in the Hospitals Year Book are many. I might assume it to be one of the larger hospitals to justify ordering sufficient badges from a manufacturer to be viable? Unless someone who wore these recognises them the best you might get is an educated guess.Your best hope is that a full set of Id'd badges finding one of these comes up for sale in future. If I can reproduce it I will try Flickr to see if anyone can help?
What this does demonstrate is the difficulty in getting an accurate attribution to such Monogram type badges, good luck!

Guilty as charged, but it's a case of more recycling than anything as I just wanted to upgrade slightly the one I had.Over the years I have collected badges in a variety of conditions and if I get the opportunity to find a cleaner or less damaged item I will sometimes try and acquire it and sell on my own as in this case(although it was tempting to keep them both),Particularly as there were slight differences re colour etc.
And yes it will be going to a deserving collector.

I am reminded of an Oscar Wilde quote; What is a cynic?A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
As frequently stated before the final price is merely an expression of the interest of two parties and not necessarily what it is worth. As long as the buyer is happy with their purchase that's all that matters.Good luck to them.

I'm guessing the nurse badge collecting fraternity is relatively small compared to some interest areas, so my question is, who is buying these badges at this money, I'm guessing you all know each other. I watch eBay for other items and I have seen a fair few of these specific badges sold and in the great scheme of things they don't appear to be hens teeth. Is it collectors, dealers, speculators?

Good quality and period named badges from the London will always find a customer and this one reached £113 which I thought was fair.It is very difficult however to explain the difference in a badges worth to a non nurse as they see one nurse badge fetch this so therefore why isn't their badge worth the same.
I was approached by someone with a number of a scarce badge that he wanted to sell.Originally I told him that normally I would expect one such badge to go for £.. however as he had a large quantity he couldn't understand why that price went down considerably. From being a rare badge his find would have made this a very common item and consequently worth very little. He hasn't got back to me but I may reveal more if these appear on Ebay any time soon!

I must admit I do like a wee guess on what a badge will fetch and was pleasantly surprised at winning the SEN tommies badge. It went far below my guess as did recently winning the EN for Edinburgh Royal.
Quick question - does anyone know when they stopped training SENs at st Thomas's I thought it was around 2000 with the advent of project 2000 but someone else thought it was 1984/5?

the Tommies SEN badge is lovely so all I need know is the red box for the SRN version and the tea towel ( seriously there is one)  Does the tomies SEN version have its own box or is the same as the SEN one? Apart from tommies and the London does any other hospitals have there own boxes if issue?(hope that makes sense)

I dont know- I had not thought about that; the sen tommies I have also does not have a box- think they were plastic like mine from the london by the 1980's- the london had paper ones, white in the / 1960-1970's..

Title: St Thomas's Hospital SEN Badge.
Post by: johnny4v on October 18, 2015, 05:25:06 PM
It is interesting to note that when St Thomas's Hospital offered training for Enrolled Nurses the badge was inscribed on the back as Name of Recipient and year it was awarded(1969) plus Training School for Pupil Nurses ST. Thomas's Hospital.
The current badge on Ebay is inscribed with the name of the Recipient and the year it was awarded (1987) plus Nightingale School St Thomas's Hospital. As Enrolled Nurses training did not start at St Thomas's Hospital until the 1960's I wonder if the Nightingale School of Nursing was only for RGN at that time and SEN training was undertaken by pupil nurses within the hospital group and the schools of nursing attached to the hospital e.g. Lambeth Hospital, South Western Hospital. It would appear from the wording on the back of the badges that at sometime the Nightingale School of Nursing became responsible for all Nurse Education.
I would appreciate if anyone has any knowledge of this or views on the subject.

Thought I'd re post Lizzie post on here as its a popular topic:

Hi , Please can you all let me know- or indeed the police if the finding come up for sale on ebay: a Matching London Hospital and GNC badge set. They were stolen last night during a break in and are of great sentimental value:
Last night (16/12/2015) our house was broken into in Lymington and my badges were stolen – my LH badge has 'Adrian Hughes' inscribed on the back, the GNC badge has the finding registration number  76HO844E

I afraid it went to a dealer who intends to sell it on once researched(Me).So far I have ascertained that the recipient was in the East African Military Nursing Service(Of which I know little) and served with 150 British General Hospital. She was apparently on the SS Khedive Ismail carrying troops to the Far East in in January 1944 when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean with a loss of 1,269 personnel ,including 77 women. She was one of the few survivors. It does rather put some of our concerns in to context!

Did the London ever issue a prize medal & was it ever part of the LCC Hospitals, & therefore ever a LCC badge?
Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: backman on November 29, 2016, 02:15:55 PM
Not that I'm aware of but perhaps Sarah can advise ? As a Voluntary Hospital it was not one of the LCC hospitals and therefore did not issue any of those badges.

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: johnny4v on November 30, 2016, 03:23:16 PM
THE LONDON HOSPITAL was founded in 1740 as a Voluntary Hospital. It was never controlled by the London County Council and never issued a badge like those issued by LCC controlled hospitals. The  London Hospital had the first medical school founded in 1985. The London Hospital received royal assent to it new title - THE ROYAL LONDON HOSPITAL in 1990. Being one of 12 teaching hospitals in London it had its own Board Of Governors who managed the hospital up until 1974. The London Hospital badge was instituted in 1931 as a nurses league badge and from 1943 it was awarded to all nurses who completed their training and passed final state examinations. The Hospital Badge has never altered in style but was reduced in size by Miss Littleboy to save on the cost of making it.  Hope this helps.

I thought that this had been asked here before... not that I am aware, examination prizes were awarded in the Eva Luckes's time, from 1880 onwards. There is reference to them in the probationers/sisters & nurses records which I am working on, but not what was received..

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: backman on February 10, 2017, 06:41:23 AM
I am sure it may reappear at a later date but still believe it is unlikely to sell at that price without considerably more provenance and other medals or badges to the nurse. There are a few such similar listings of other Nursing items which appear including a Newcastle medal which for some reason hasn't yet sold at £600!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-Silver-Royal-Victoria-Infirmary-Newcastle-On-Tyne-HEATH-MEDAL-Cased-F2-/381539630986?hash=item58d588bf8a:g:pj8AAOSw5dNWtdSq

At least when my gold medals don't sell I can always have them melted down to recoup the investment!!!!!!!!!!

Now what was of interest was the superb Military Medal to a QAIMNS nurse E.James for bravery under fire during the First World War .Sold for a very reasonable £3,300 . Whilst I am sure that we will see a few LH badges in the coming years ,bravery awards to nurses are not common at all .How much would a nursing George medal be worth?

I agree that a new bunch of collectors out there seem willing to pay high prices for the better badges. It may settle back down eventually as it often does, for those of us who have seen similar surges over the years. The question is ,is this good or bad for the hobby as a whole?  High prices can flush some badges out of drawers onto the market but then every vendor thinks their badge is worth the same as a Nightingale or large London. I certainly think that fewer quality badges are coming onto the market, perhaps because they are already in our personal collections? As one of the remits for this site is to promote the popularity and interest in the history of School of Nursing badges, it seems we are a victim of our own success? Talking with other vendors, many say that they are struggling to find new stock at reasonable prices.

The one on Sally's site was £450 if memory serves me right.  However she tends to be a tad on the expensive side & she usually cleans the badges too.

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge

It was a little time ago. Dame Phyllis was the Matron  1970"s at the London Hospital and went on to be the Chief Nursing Officer at the Department Of Health. Her Hospital Badge came up on the well know site E*** I remember seeing it and hoped it would be bought by the Hospital Museum. I do not know if this was the case.

I have had a trail through the notice board posts and see that Dame Phyllis badge sold for 377 on 9 March 1915. As previously stated this badge is of great importance. I do not know who bought it or if it went to the London Hospital Museum. It would be nice to know where it ended up. I do hope it went to someone or body connected to The London Hospital.

I hope this will be or at least one day be on display in The Royal Hospital Museum. This collection is so important to the history of nursing at the hospital. I note Miss Littleboy was awarded the larger size badge. As the President of Nurses League 1934 to 1935 she was responsible for introducing the smaller size badge.  I wonder if she also had a smaller version.

I'd say a much rarer item and good value. If anything I'd say that Nightingales are still overpriced for the number of them in circulation. That being said there is a rather nice WW2 group in the next Dix, Noonan and Webb auction which includes an MBE,RRC  service medals and cased Nightingale; https://www.dnw.co.uk/auctions/catalogue/lot.php?auction_id=494&lot_id=57503&search=1

If only my lottery numbers would come up!

Hi.

Agreed!!  But how many of us, I wonder, would be willing to take the risk of starting low on a very worthwhile item..... What if it did not rise - although I think that anyone registered at SoN (with access to all those badges) should have an idea of real worth..

Now if I could just find a LH SEN fully inscribed...

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: wilfb on April 14, 2021, 08:39:55 PM
HI.

I suppose that it is good for sellers, but for collectors looking for reasonable prices - perhaps we will have to look harder.  My own collection seems fairly complete, but I am a sucker for belts and belt buckles!!  These seem now to appear more frequently and whilst still not cheap they are still attainable items.

But the original design badge and box would be a good investment - unless there is a price crash.....

Hi.

I have both versions but, and I hate to admit this (!),  I seem to have mislaid an EN version.... Having two homes, here and in the UK, has it's drawbacks. I keep two collections, both locked up and cannot look in the UK safe until I get back.

Leaves one just a little anxious!!! Is it there?!!!

Title: Re: London Hospital Badge
Post by: wilfb on September 20, 2021, 11:15:41 AM
Hi Myk.

I think that we may have that number - I will need to look it out and get back..  Which provokes a further thought - the SEN/EN badges from the London hospitals are probably in much shorter supply the the registered nurse badges - and may command higher prices.

And I do have an ancient copy of 'Letters from Matron to nursing staff - 1928 - 32' which may be revealing.  (The London Hospital). May take a little time....
