Like the England & Wales (E&W) GNC and nursing act of 1919 - the Nurses Registration (Scotland) Act 1919 also came about. They issued badges from 1925 - until 1983 with the UKCC taking over and no more badges were issued. The Scottish GNC badges for both RGNs and ENGs are of a different design unlike their E&W colleagues The RGN badge is circular in shape and superimposed on a Geneva cross. The centre shows the Scottish saltire ( a white St Andrews cross on a dark blue background). The Enrolled nurse badge is described in the literarture as acorn shaped with 2 semi circular bands at the top - with the words General nursing council of Scotland. The enrolled nurse qualifications are found in the acorn piece.
One of the major differences between the 2 countries SRN/RGN badges is that in E&W you only recieved 1 badge upon qualification which was sent back to the GNC. This was then re-engraved with any finding qualifications that might have been obtained. e.g RMN/RFN/RSCN. In Scotland another badge ( same design) was issued with the qualification listed on the front eg Registered Mental Nurse Scotland. It was possible to have 5 Scottish GNC badges, should you have undertaken all the specialised nursing courses, whilst only recieving one in E&W!!!

The GNC or England and Wales must have had quite a problem adding all the letters and dates if someone were to qualify in just three fields? I quite like the Scots method of having separate badges for each field of registration, but it must have been more expensive.
And what of the nurse who may have wanted to wear them all simultaneously?

I'm still working on that one!! I keep on reading and researching so I'm sure I'll find the answer.
I'm still getting over my hols in Athens so once I've sobered up and my liver has recovered from far to much ouzo & mythos I'll keep on reading. One downside I'm still "finding " with BA over my claim for lost luggage which arrived the day before we were due to fly back!!!! ( I'm still trying to find the website for angry BA customers)
