Hi.

Many thanks jock. I do so enjoy the adoration!!

But seriously it is nice to know that the page is enjoyed - and don't mind at all that there are no coach party's pointing at my home as they tour past. Watch for that finding nurse history though. It has been, and still is, a challenging one. Very rewarding though. I am always anxious that our efforts are appreciated and always await comment with trepedition..... Still a short wait away whilst we finalise but it shouldn't be too long now.

Best Regards,
Will.

Hi.

Well!! Missed the deadline this time (by 13 days) & the pins and needles in my fingers at the time of the last news have now become total numbness.... But - The Latest news (April) is now online here:-

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

But this time it has been a bonanza (read 'back-breaking!) The news page itself; Page 6 of Barbara Tyler's St Thomas Hospital Scrapbook; and no less than three new articles from our own Sarah Rogers! All the latter are worth a read, but the short history of Lucy Cox - including around 65 original photographs (I am going to say it!) is a picture. We have also added links to Peters new site.

All the links are there and hopefully working correctly - if they don't please refresh your bowser before giving up - it often works!!

Any errors are all mine, but please do tell me about them - nicely.....

Very best for now, please enjoy,
Will.

Thank you for all your hard work Will. The pins and needles of course prove that overuse of a particular area (eg hands for typing) precludes the use of any other area thus confirming that men cannot multitask!!!!

Hi.

Well!! Not a single missed deadline - in fact we are day early - absolutely a first!  Perhaps fired-up by our imminent holidays?....

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

And another bonanza (read 'still back-breaking!) The news page itself; Page 7 of Barbara Tyler's St Thomas Hospital Scrapbook; and no less than three new articles from our own Sarah Rogers! All the latter are worth a read - Muriel Mary Williams - Birmingham Children's Hospital; St Bartholomew's Hospital; Queen Elizabeth United Hospital Birmingham; Mary Richard -  Mildmay Mission Hospital, Shoreditch; and  'A tale of three Nightingales' - (Catherine Ethel McMinn Graham; Mary Mildred Pickering; and Victoria Watson -Taylor).

There are but three slight errors - but I am hoping that no one will spot them before I eliminate them tomorrow. I will issue the member emails then..

All the links are there and hopefully working correctly - if they don't please refresh your bowser before giving up - it often works!!

Any errors are all mine, but please do tell me if you find any - nicely please..... Applause is acceptable (if the product is worthy)!!

Many thanks Will! As the well known technophobe of SofN I don't know how to put a little figure for clapping applause but please accept it.
I will be reading it again tomorrow when hopefully I will have recovered from "grandmother lag" - looking after my 7and 5 year grandchildren for a week is so tiring much as I love them!!
Took them shopping for some clothes, 7 year old needed vests and assured me she would be allowed crop top variety then threw wobbly when refused, I said to her "You can stand in your head and whistle God save the Queen but you're still not getting them " which has become the mantra for the 5 year old who is telling everyone one what I said with lots of giggles.

Dear Magpie,

Your reply was worth a lot of serious clapping (we don't have suitable icons built in). We too have growing grandchildren (3 boys) and I have one daughter who is now adult.  But when she was younger she seriously offended me one evening. I asked her (without comment) to pass me a hard backed story book. Then struck her over the head with it!!! She never offended again, but would never pass me a hard-cover book!! I can remember sometimes giving my own mother a hard time when I was a child too.... But thanks again for relating that - it's a cold gloomy day and I enjoyed the laugh!

Will.

Thank you so much Will, a really lovely read on such a finding cold day with a biting wind. (Envious of you in Crete!)
The three articles are such interesting reading - really interesting history from Sarah, finding postbox details from you and some real nostalgia reading Tony's career in nursing.
Seeing your Plymouth Village Nurse badge made my remember my role as a District Nurse in 1970, I was given one country patch and also an Army patch taking in Tidworth and Perham Down ( for anyone knowing the area). I was only working part time and supposed to do mornings only with 2 patches. I went to one old lady and introduced myself and she replied " Oh, you'm the new Parish Nurse then are you?" She told me that the old Parishes used to pay for a nurse and provide a house. Another 2 patients both had parrots finding loose which terrified me as I had been badly pecked by a parrot when I was little. It was usual for all of the stroke patients to be cared for in their old double beds always the furthest side away from you, no hoists at that time. I got called to the HQ to see the boss to explain why I kept crossing from Hampshire into Wiltshire so many times per day because apparently there was some charge for this cross county, she decided she would accompany me to show me how to be more efficient in travelling - after having been whizzed all over the place to do the diabetic injections and to meet up with colleagues to help with heavy patients plus coming out of an isolated cottage and having to get the peacocks off my car roof she decided that she would let me continue as before!!Happy days that didn't last so long as I became pregnant and at 7 months couldn't clamber over the beds!my daughter was only 3 months old when I started and I sometimes took her with me ( illegally of course) if my friend who looked after her couldn't for some reason. The baby was the best tonic for a lot of lonely people who were delighted to have a cuddle.

Well done to all 3 contributions. They make very interesting reading and the photos of Tony's career compliment the history extremely well. As for postbox, my postman certainly never has delivered such treasures in so short a period. Indeed if I get 7 or 8 a year (Irish) then I'd consider I was doing well. Recently was talking to someone who had few badges and while I haven't been able to obtain them, she did send me some photos (which I've put to gallery and which go into my "wanted" list of badges.
Thank you Wilf for your sterling work and to everyone for contributions on site (I've been a silent member of late).

Eric

The Tredegar House photo is  I think the London Hospital nurse training school PTS in the Bow Rd; the uniform was changed in the 1950's after Norman Hartnell redesigned it. It is hard to tell how long their skirts are, I have seen photos of nurses in it from the 1930;s to 1940's. I doubt this one was in the war years as the LH PTS was sent out to ? Trueloves in Essex for the duration of the war. The size of the puffs give the LH dress away; post about 1954 they were made smaller, and wore brown shoes and creamish tights... not black. I do not know when students stopped wearing white sleeves on their fore arms.... Sisters still wore them in my day! (1980's) So to answer the question that badge I do not think is related to those nurses if they are LH nurses....is a Welsh badge? Sarah

Hi....

Yes, I 'erred Peter - deliberately I am ashamed to say.... We did not have any new articles for example - largely owing to my own lack of time on this occasion to write-up our progress and an article on maker names.  But it will all follow, promise.  But - I also owe an apology to you as I wanted to send the badges owing from last years small competition on my dashing around Europe. Can I do that (send the badges to you for claiming) please? I will refund any postage arising form distribution. No one won the small competition so I declared everyone a winner!!

Hope the News was otherwise interesting.

Very Best,
Will.

Once again there is, hopefully something for everyone. The Progress report on our online galleries plus new links; a special 'Collectors Corner' report on PCANSR badges and the Garrett set; Tea at Claridges in Mayfair, London, and a very special badge donation; reports on gallery photograph numbers (increasing steadily); another photograph from the past; and member photographs (2) on Welsh badges.  Plus lots to read... Enjoy!  Let me know if you spot any errors. No new articles this time but two in the offing....

Very Best,
Will.

Hi.

Perhaps 48 hours early  - or 4 months late!!

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

But we really have been incredibly busy - and have managed to reply to our emails; register 28 new members; and even add a few new badges to the gallery. We have also had to move several thousand emails. Adrian, our technical Administrator did most of that work plus saved us much time by adding a security program which is now saving much time. Onward...

All the links are there and hopefully working correctly - if they don't *please refresh your bowser before giving up - it often works!!

Any errors are all mine, but please do tell me if you find any - nicely please..... Applause - yes please..!. Me? I just hope you find the effort worthy!

Very best for now, Enjoy,
Will.

Did anyone get the email I wonder?

Replies appreciated.

Hi.

Well!! Done it again! Not a single missed deadline - in fact we are two days early - absolutely a first!  But then I am attempting to ignore the fact that I may be months late!  Everything and it's donkey seemed to prevent my getting the due pages completed last year - but my apologies were well received - thank you.

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

And another good read I hope - The news page itself; and three new articles - although one  (Ann Braddick) is a preview (with more photographs to follow)...

Thanks Will,as ever an interesting read.Well done to all contributors. Inspired me to look again at Miss Joyner. My best guess so far is that this may be Agnes M L Joyner who was superintendent of the Nottingham County Nursing Federation late in her career.I will dig a bit more when I get a chance.

Hi.

Published on schedule! Lots of news, more articles imminent in 'collections' - Three new articles plus two in preparation; Public Gallery Progress - no change this time; Collectors Corner - nurse buckles & belts; A  couple of very nice Glasgow badges; Photograph from the past - details sought; +more. +++

A good read we hope along with serious thanks to all who have contributed.  We have had a couple of technical problems - recent computer and software upgrades have thrown a few spanners, but we hope that we have managed to keep these out of the works!  We do try....

Enjoy.
Very Best, Will.

Very enjoyable as always so congratulations to all contributors.I was particularly interested in the article by Sue Barker on Amy Anne Braddick and the image of her in uniform whites in 1942. It bears a very close resemblance to a painting I have in my pending pile(In need of restoration and research).Simply titled Matron it shows a QAIMNS Reserve nurse in tropical uniform.
What do people think,Could it be the same person?  https://www.flickr.com/photos/backmanmal/30277834944/#comment72157667643864987

Hi Peter,

Could be - the painting is a little coarser than what I believe is a camera portrait, but it is apossibility. And yo never know, someone may pop up with the answer.... Lets see what b others think.

That particular article by the way, has a way to go before completion - there is a lot of material/photographs to deal with but it should be done by the next news - couple of months away...

A quick read through looks like another sterling effort.I am away(again) for a few days but it appears that one of the earliest dedicated hospital buckle may be that of Bart's. I have a glass plate negative of a group of army nurses during the boer war with one wearing a Bart's buckle and will try and copy for you on my return.I believe there may be a few more,as I have seen one with A H which I believe may possibly be for ancoats hospital, and a few others.Another up to now neglected subject in Nursing History!

I have found another SoN issued buckle which I had heard of but never seen.Only a picture I'm afraid as the owner, quite rightly intends to hang on to it! It dates form the amalgamation of the the University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospital schools of Nursing into the Bloomsbury College of Nurse Education in the late 1980s and combines the emblems from the two separate buckles.

Can I just say what a brilliant job re my gallery, I'm suitably impressed.  Can I ask do you adjust the light as I know the depth of the blue felt varies according to the light in my house when I take the photos?
Again a job well done.

HI Mike.

Many thanks for that, sincerely.

But - would if I could but I can't!!  I would need a real sample of the background before I could get that right... And then, the light in my house would vary... I can say that there is much more that could be done with the badge photographs all round, but unfortunately I just don't have the time right now.

Maybe when we reach the 'Book' stage...

Thanks again for your observation.

Hi.
And welcome to the 49th issue of SoN news _ August 2019.

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

As usual much work has gone on in the background to bring readers what is perhaps an exceptional issue.

Our articles have been extended/updated.  Our galleries developed further. 'Collectors Corner' is worth a special look with our newly acquired Bart's belt  buckle, to say Nothing of the Royal Victoria hospital (Belfast) additions by member  'eric' and associated gallery photographs, plus two superb Scottish badges from n 'nursesue'.  Special mention of our Ann Braddick's nursing history - a good read with a link in the news - or here if you've missed it:-

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections59.htm

And also the already started Barry Suttons gallery for next time....

Editing this page has been difficult .  I seem to have had the easy part.  Our  thanks to all contributors - and especially to our Tech' Admin 'adrianb' without whom none would have been possible.

Enjoy the read,
Will.

I've just enjoyed looking at the buckles article, food for thought. Some of the non organisation specific Victorian and Edwardian buckles may not have been worn by nurses- my great grandmother gave me a special one when I qualified, which I wore in intensive care- but she was not a nurse- we have pictures of her wearing it in her school photos.
Title: Re: SoN News Page
Post by: backman on September 16, 2019, 10:21:12 AM
I agree Sarah, I believe most of the Victorian and Edwardian buckles seen and sold as "Nursing buckles" are likely to be fashion items of the time,a few of which may perhaps have found their way into uniforms of the period. The evidence of such buckles being worn as part of a uniform, on photographic Cabinet cards and Carte de Visit of the 1880s-1910 is very limited. In fact that do not seem to appear widely until the late 1950s onwards, perhaps reaching their peak in the 1970 and 80s? Many of the earlier fashion buckles were recycled as Nursing pieces and the practice of gifting them seems to have found a whole new market for earlier buckles. The fact that new buckles were manufactured to meet demand shows in the appearance of hallmark dates from the 1970s onwards and advertisements in the nursing journals of the day. I have found few hallmarked buckles at all dating between 1914 and 1960 which may indicate a lack of such demand? Clearly a lot more information required but perhaps yet another nursing myth to be debunked?
Oh and as for the buckles consisting of full plated links I have never seen any such buckle being worn in  confirmed nurse photograph, being impractical to the nth degree. What I do seen what I believe to be Mental Nurse pictures are which leather belt to support the weight of the large numbers of keys for locked wards. Will try and add supporting pictures when I can

'Collectors Corner' is worth another special look - our newly acquired St Thomas' belt buckle photographs - perhaps a first!

To say Nothing of the continued Royal Victoria hospital (Belfast) additions by member  'eric' and associated gallery photographs, plus two more superb Scottish badges from 'nursesue'.  Special mention of our Ann Braddick's nursing history - a good read with a link in the news - or here if you've missed it:-

To say nothing of two more superb Scottish badges from 'nursesue'.  And there is (perhaps confusingly!) "News Page 51" - not really a back number but an explanation of how and why the site originated - plus where it is now. A good read perhaps....

http://www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections62.htm

And also the already started Barry Suttons gallery - albeit delayed again for lack of time....

Hi,

Well, the final date advertised for our June 2020 News page (June 30th) came and left without me - yesterday!!

But we managed it today (1st July) and here are with our fifty-second SoN News Page.

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

For all the work, there doesn't seem much to put on-line (there is of course plenty already there) with the gallery pages continuing and articles being prepared. 'Collectors Corner' also reports no new additions, but there is a fair amount there to perhaps reacquaint with past events.

A couple of new South-African badges are certainly worth a look - promise.

This month has again been particularly difficult. Covid 19 certainly has not helped, and the loss of a close friend was not good news by anyone's measure.

On the bright side - and yes, there is one - We were locked down on Crete before we were due to return earlier in the year (Greece locked down almost before anyone else) and decided to remain until we deemed it safe to return to the UK.  The weather is superbly hot. HOT! We are looking forward to returning - hopefully soon. Our first flights from the UK to Chania are not for another week or so, so we are watching carefully our UK situation.

Enjoy the  read...

Will.

Hi,

Well, the final date advertised for our August 2020 News page (August 31) came and left without me again - two days ago - Apologies!!

But we managed the upload today (2nd Sept) - and here are with our fifty-third SoN News Page.

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

A lot of work again and I hope something to show for it.  'Collectors Corner' has new additions (St Bartholomew's 1897 (!) buckle, plus a scarce silver plated nurses belt & buckle for the Middlesex Hospital London. Mounted on its original Ward Sisters' Petersham belt).

A couple more 'National' badges - North East Manchester SoN Enrolled Nurse badge and a University College of Worcester badge - Nice.

Again another particularly difficult month. Covid 19 certainly has not helped. We look like canceling a booked flight to the UK too. Perhaps the new gallery being added for 'nursesue' will get more time now....

On the bright side - and yes, there is one - We are still on Crete - we were due to return shortly but have decided to remain until it is deemed safe to return, seems more sensible. It is still superbly hot. HOT! 39oC right now. We were [/u] looking forward to returning - having not seen our family for so long now. But we know many who are and have had worse times.

Enjoy the  read - make our struggle with the elements worthwhile!!...

Hi. Ok - but I can't take it to the post (Saganaki/Mythos) as we are still locked down.

I have a suggestion.  I will eat/drink tomorrow and you must trust me to enjoy!!

And Oh' I do want to get back to Waddo soon - they have that huge runway and much nearby Guinness!! Nearly time for the next news Sue - But first it's Sunday tomorrow - eggs and bacon for tea!! Without the Guinness I'm afraid....

Take good care,

Hi,

Well, the first January news page this year went up online and on time!!

And here are with our fifty-sixth SoN News Page.  Welcome to 2021....

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

Once again again there was considerable hard work - several technical issues - and I hope something to show for it.

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

A lot of work again and I hope something to show for it.  Belt/Buckles galore!! THREE! RAF; Royal Cornwall Hospital; Prudential Assurance; Two nice badges in 'National Galleries' - Brighton ODA plus a Hosp for Sick Children Bazaar Coronation medal; 'nursesue's gallery update is ONLINE;  it is a 'must" read +++, another 24 superb badges - plus of course a fully finding gallery page.

On the bright side - and yes, there is one - We are still on Crete - we were due to return in early April but have decided to remain until it is deemed safe to return, seems more sensible.  We are missing our family and friends - but we know many who are and have had, and are still having, worse times.

Hi,

Well, the second - March news page this year went online three days early!!

So here are with our fifty-seventh SoN News Page. And quite an issue too - don't miss this one....

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

We have been able to add  some really nice additions to collectors corner, including both badges and buckles and not finding a number of donated badges for which we are very grateful indeed, sincerely.

PLUS - a very special request for assistance from a retired surgeon, Dixie Mills, who included a photograph of her grandmother in uniform around 1910 (published herein) asking for assistance with researching..., **If you can help please let me know and I will pass your link to Dixie.

It's a good read and has more additions to http://schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Collections1/Collections60.htm - belts ad Buckles, which continue apace!

Enjoy the  read - make our work worthwhile!! Please...

Many thanks for that, nice read and and well done on another issue. Re the article on East London Children's Hospital badges.  I was not aware there were two other variants of the GOSH round badge, my blue one with red enamelling to the centre makes it 3 variants and I would love to know the significance of the red enamel.  Also no mention is made of the maroon varient of the green EN badge, again I'd like to know of its purpose.

There is a red enamelled version of the green rectangular shaped badge.  I have the more popular round badge with red enamel to its centre rather than blue.  There are 2 variants of the round blue badge and it's the wording which is different and this is pointed out in the article.
Hope this makes sense.

This is just an idea, but we had GOSH student nurses with us at LH, for general experience whilst doing their combined RGN/RSCN training. I always wondered if they got an LH badge to, but never heard of one who did. So perhaps the different colours reflect which general hospital they went to for the RN part?

There was also an earlier version of the round badge with wording (GOSH ) Nurses League

Hi,

Well, the first - January 2022 news page this year went online only three days late!!

So here are with our sixty-first SoN News Page. And quite an issue too....

www.schoolsofnursing.co.uk/Newspages/SiteNews.htm

We have been able to add  some really nice additions to collectors corner, including both badges and a scarf(!) which may be from Seafield Hospital - I believe that Seafield Hospital Sick Children's Hospital is in Scotland, UK, but am attempting to verify this; some of donated badge (photographs) for which we are very grateful indeed, sincerely.

PLUS - a very special request for assistance from a male nurse who is looking for his Best Man, whom he lost touch  with whilst serving in the forces -
'I am trying to trace my best man of 1973 by the name of John Elsegood'. May not be too difficult - Broadlands School of Nursing, Norwich, Norfolk. 1973.

Go on, make someone's day!!

It has been another difficult one news page... Our main computer refused to play ball and we had to transfer everything to our back-up.  Not a simple task.

But its a good read.
Enjoy
