It would appear to be unnamed looking at the pictures.  When was this badge last issued?

So on this basis the 300 odd badges in display cases in the Founders Hall at St Thomas' are worth in excess of 100,000? Perhaps they need to tighten security?

if I didn't have one yes I'd be tempted Took me year to get one and will always cherish it - seems as if ebay nurse badges are getting more expensive for the rarer ones. Seems as if the Scottish badges once so reasonable are rising in price and have I have more competition in trying to get them.
now where is my stripey jumper and my bag marked swag?? oh yes can anyone give me directions to the founders hall???? ;)

??????????   I don't think I'll ever understand the reason for this particular badge reaching these amounts? There are far more rare and desirable badges out there in my opinion. It just confirms that unlike military medals and badges which, more or less, have a given rarity and value,Nursing items are pretty much down to what someone is prepared to pay on the day. I have looking back through my records of what badges have been traded on ebay since 2002 and regret both the ones I didn't pay more for and those I paid perhaps too much!

Some people have been saving for a long time to try and buy this badge, they will always go for around this price, others spend on drink ,cigs or hols cars whatever, I'm happy.

As I frequently say, a badge is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it,and as long as that person is happy with that, that's all that matters. Enjoy!

Hi Sue, nice ones indeed.
Were they part of the same SoN?  If so what does the white & green enamel signify on the respective medal bars, if anything.
Regards

Thanks Sue,I had seen it and wonder just when the market for these will abate? I have to say that I am not particularly engaged with the badge market at present, perhaps something interesting is around the corner?
Title: Re: St Thomas Hospital Badge

i can see why people want this badge but my disillusionment stems from having to pay more than i want for scottish badges but  still love them when i win Who knows maybe the market will settle down again or maybe i'll buy from other sources but trouble is can't help but want the ebay scots badges Is there help from this addiction??! ;)

Well it's the London Hospital  badge saga all over again!5 Unissued Nightingale badges ,minus pins, have just been listed as one lot on Ebay, starting at 100. It will be interesting to see what these go for and if any more are in the offing but perhaps it may well bring these into the reach of the average collector?

No, not me either Maggie, but then I already have one of each (registered/enrolled) plus an additional registered. (Different issue dates). So one mustn't be greedy!

Hold that thought, and you just never know. This last month has seen over a dozen Nightingale badges come up for sale at various different auctions so it rather reinforces the fact that there were a lot issued.I just wish that was reflected in the prices they still fetch, but again who knows?

Are you a soothsayer Peter? There is now " a job lot of 5 new, unissued badges for 620 "on *bay!! Can't afford that either.
Title: Re: St Thomas Hospital Badge
Post by: wilfb on June 11, 2014, 08:07:18 PM
Yes, I think that Peter is a gold-plated soothsayer! But he says the nicest things about badges...

Having admitted that he is in a class by himself I would like to add a little advice. Owning a 'Nightingale' may well be accepted as the pinnacle by many, but for my money (and I spent a little on mine) only an issued badge, bearing the inscribed name of the original recipient, is worth top-dollar.... Especially if it has the original case. The latter is important as an empty (genuine) case can fetch in excess of a hundred pounds....

But at the end of the day, if an unissued version it has to be, go for it. But be sure that it is genuine. Funnily enough, I have a finding that even an unissued (genuine) badge may soon acquire serious collector status. Maybe best get one as soon as...

Will - this lot of 5 badges is now up to 710 which I certainly could never afford. I guess they will be sold off singly by the winner at a great profit. They are unnamed and don't have pins on back as apparently never issued. The plot thickens!!

Maybe an ethical dealer might win them and sell them off singly at a modest profit? Perhaps on an instalment plan to bring them within reach of the less flush collector?........

...Or alternatively we might just buy the winning ticket on tonights EuroMillions Lottery and buy it out of the estimated 109,000,000 prize? Then with the money left from buying these Nightingales you might like to endow a Gallery, rather like Lord Ashcroft did for Victoria Cross winners)to commemorate the Nurses who wore these badges with pride?
We can always dream and yes I do have my ticket!

Oh dear Peter....

I am so busy with badge collections that I don't have time to check ebay... And Pam says that the machine she uses to access the bank has turned up it's toes.... I only have a couple of pounds in my back pocket - (certainly less than 700) so it looks as if I'm out!!

Besides I cant find the lot!! - Help.....

Hi.

Having now taken a minute to have a look (thanks for the link Peter) I can most definitely say that they are not for me - no genuine boxes and I just do not like the appearance of the reverse sides/fittings. I will stick to the named versions of known provenance...

I still feel a little guilty at having snatched my SEN version from Peter, well from his wife actually, a few years ago. I did offer it back for the bid price, but, gentleman that he is, Peter felt that there would be another along soon.... If I ever get another (SEN version - named) I intend to offer it to him at the price I originally paid!

But on those lines - I can't help wondering what an SEN version would reach at auction.....

Will.
