Acknowledgements
The creation of a this nurse history is the
work of several people. Not least of these is the nurse herself -
Evelyn Betham, who created
this professional picture by her own actions. In the first instance by
becoming a nurse. In the second by becoming a nurse whose career was
notable, but like so many others was almost lost as a complete story.
Her story became known by pure chance, a kind trick of fate or higher
hand. It could not have been told in it's present state of completion were
it not for the dedicated efforts of a number of selfless people.
Barbara Carr - Evelyn's daughter, who supplied much information,
photographs of badges and ephemera which had belonged to her mother for our use -
and who has continued her support throughout and beyond. She has the
same determination demonstrated by her mother in the history.
Sue Barker - who
diligently and swiftly carried out genealogical research expertly and for free, and
without whom this history would have been very much less than a real success.
To Peter ('backman') an inveterate seeker of all aspects of the history of
the nursing profession, the man behind the nursingbadges and nursinghistory websites, to say nothing of his selfless support of our own site
- I know that he will understand when I say that I remain the
'Indebted1'.
To Barry Sutton - who has already contributed so much to nursing history
on schoolsofnursing.co.uk and his own public websites. His contributions
in answering our military hospital questions, without once asking why,
saved vast amounts of time and my personal gratitude.
Finally. My everlasting gratitude to my wife Pam, a nurse
and retired nurse-teacher herself, for her invaluable help in proof
reading and checking my work - putting up with my idiosyncrasies and not
bemoaning the time I manage to steal from our retirement to indulge my
enthusiasm for nursing history.
Sincere thanks to all - it is not possible to express the depth of my
own feelings for all the assistance in helping to complete this history.
Or as complete as we could possibly make it. As far as it goes today
anyway. The privilege of creating it was handed to schoolsofnursing by
Nurse Evelyn Betham's daughter Barbara, I can
only hope that my best will have justified her trust. My heartfelt thanks.
